Program description

Teaching English

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA)

The program offers professional teacher training with a focus on social action and addressing the needs of adult students. U.S. News & World Report listed it among the top online graduate programs in education in the 2013 edition of Best Colleges. English is the preeminent language of global communications, and demand for TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) professionals trained in the best practices of teaching adults is greater than ever.

Because teachers learn best by working in the classroom, The New School’s 30-credit master's program in TESOL connects theory to hands-on practice in your area of specialization — teaching or curriculum development — with guidance from an international faculty that includes renowned authors and ESOL professionals such as Jeremy Harmer and ELTon award winner Scott Thornbury.

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all are motivated to enter a field that lets them work across borders and cultures to help students learn English as a second language or foreign language. Through its progressive, cutting-edge curriculum and vibrant online network of students, faculty, and alumni, the TESOL master's program develops adaptive, reflective practitioners who continue to raise the standards of the English language teaching profession.
