Program description

PhD in Life Sciences

During their graduate studies (M.Sc & Ph.D) our students participate in the advanced, innovative and groundbreaking scientific research conducted in our institute in the many fields of life sciences.

Graduate studies take place only within the research track, which requires submission of a thesis, and finding a supervisor among the Institute's researchers.

The major part of the graduate studies is carried out under the guidance of the Institute's researchers within the framework of the various research laboratories (see all dissertation topics).

In addition, the students are required to choose courses from the Institute's annual program, in accordance with the subject of their research, the degree towards which they are studying and the requirements of their study track (see all study tracks).

Admission requirements

An individual may apply for doctoral studies if he/she meets the following conditions:

  • Holds a Master's degree with thesis from the Hebrew University, or from an institution of higher education in Israel, or from a non-Israeli institution of higher education, recognized by the Hebrew University, with the following grades:
    • Master's Degree – minimum grade 85;
    • Master's thesis – minimum grade of 85 (90 in Humanities);
    • Master's final exam – minimum grade 85 (wherever applicable)

or -

  • Studying in the final year for Master's degree with a thesis at the Hebrew University, or at an institution of higher education in Israel, or at a non-Israeli institution of higher education, recognized by the Hebrew University, with a grade average of 85 at least. or -

  • Studying at the Hebrew University in the direct Ph.D. track, and successfully completed the requirements of the track in the faculty to which he/she belongs.

Foreign Students

A Ph.D student whose previous studies are from a non Israeli university will present a certificate concerning the level of his command of English, such as TOEFL or IELTS scores or AMIR / AMIRAM tests.

The grades defined as "exemption" are:


  • TOEFL - 95; IELTS - 7; AMIR \ AMIRAM - 134; European standards - C1
  • The minimal grades required for acceptance as a Ph.D. student are:
  • TOEFL - 80; IELTS - 6; AMIR \ AMIRAM - 120.; European standards - B2
