Program description

Master of Digital Media

A sixteen month internationally recognized, research informed and industry relevant professional graduate program that engages students in the development of digital media products.

What Is Digital Media?

Digital media is content that is stored in digital formats and usually distributed online. The shift from traditional media has taken place in many industries, including industries that aren’t typically associated with digital media—such as health, government and education.

Digital Media industries are unique in that they are the intersection of art, design, business and engineering.

Why MDM?

The Master of Digital Media program engages students through coursework and projects to develop essential communication, collaboration & leadership skills. The unique curriculum meets the needs of new and expanding digital media markets.

The Master of Digital Media program develops six core competencies. Together they comprise a skill set and an approach to building, managing, and leading digital media projects.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree (or equivalent) acceptable to all four CDM partner institutions in a field related to digital media. If applying from an unrelated discipline, applicants must make the case for the relationship between the discipline in which they hold their previous degree and this program and how they would benefit from the MDM program.

English Language Proficiency

English is the language of communication and instruction in the MDM program. Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies.

Why study at The Centre for Digital Media

The Master of Digital Media program was created by the industry for the industry. Our first industry partners recognized a growing need for savvy, creative innovators and entrepreneurs who could lead the booming new media sector. This founding partnership has grown into a broad network of businesses and organizations that work with the Centre and MDM students, including some of the world's leading companies such as Electronic Arts, Mozilla, Autodesk and Microsoft.

Our partners provide students with internships, employment opportunities. and they work with students on accelerated collaborative projects to develop ideas and prototypes. Industry partners can also sponsor workshops, offer guest lectures and even become instructors at the CDM. In return, we connect businesses and organizations with our unique, cross-disciplinary pool of MDM students, faculty and researchers—some of the best up-and-coming talent in British Columbia.

The Master of Digital Media program emphasizes experiential learning through project courses. Student projects are the heart of the MDM program. Each term, teams of three to six students work on focused projects to develop prototypes or applications from concept to deliverable. Projects can either be proposed by students as independent team collaborations, or sponsored by external clients. The learning objectives of these projects are to provide hands-on experience working with teammates who are from different backgrounds and disciplines, as well as valuable experience working with clients. All projects follow a 12 week development process modeled to industry standards.
