General eligibility

To be eligible to apply to a master’s program at Tampere University, you must have:

  1. Bachelor’s degree - nationally recognized first cycle degree
    • an applicable bachelor’s degree at a university or a university of applied sciences in Finland
    • a bachelor's degree completed in a university outside Finland which provides eligibility for equivalent University master’s degree studies in the country in which it was awarded.
      • with a minimum scope of 180 ECTS credits, three to four years of full-time study
      • from a relevant field for the master’s degree program that you’re applying to
      • from a recognised institution of higher education
  2. A good command of the English language for academic purposes.

Program-specific eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply to the Master’s degree program in Biomedical Technology you must have a successfully completed Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biosciences or information technology, or in a closely related field. If the degree is from a different field, it must include a sufficient amount of studies in biosciences or information technology.

Program content

During your studies you will be interacting with staff and students, discussing paradigms and Theoretical viewpoints, implementing your knowledge, and planning principles in small student teams on real-life case assignments and reflecting your development of expertise in individual and group exercises, learning Diaries and exams.

The studies provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the mechanics, design and construction of timber, steel, and concrete structures. Students learn to apply hand calculations for quick decision-making and to use computer simulations to determine whether a structure will comply with sustainable development goals and design specifications. Tampere University has a tradition of being in close dialogue with the major structural engineering companies in Finland, which offers opportunities to get to know companies and the industry. The University is active in research and the topical results are included in teaching, including for example wooden multi-storey buildings.

Goals

After completing the Master's Program in Civil Engineering, students will be able to collect, understand and critically evaluate information. Students will also be able to solve complicated and unpredictable problems by applying scientific methods, organizational practices and technological innovations in various expert, development, and leadership roles. Students can identify and assess the impacts of the built environment and develop ecologically, socially, and economically efficient and sustainable solutions through participation in public discussion and cooperation in multidisciplinary teams of experts.

By majoring in structural engineering, the graduates will be able to:

  • Understand and apply scientific methods and structural engineering principles to analyze, design and assess structures to ensure they are efficient and stable.
  • Distinguish the central actors, questions, challenges, and solutions in the field of resilient and sustainable building design and construction.
  • Develop and apply new innovative technologies and methods in building and construction.
  • Apply leadership, collaboration, management, and engineering skills in multidisciplinary teams to engineer solutions for safe and sustainable structures and buildings.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative academic research and communicate it to researchers, professional audiences, and the general public.

After completing the degree, the student is equipped to drive sustainable change, has abilities for lifelong learning, and is eligible for scientific doctoral studies.

Continuing studies

The Master's degree in civil engineering confers Eligibility to apply for admission to doctoral studies. Master of Science (Technology) graduates may seek admission to the Doctoral Program in the Built Environment that leads to the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology.
