Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Science and Engineering

The Bachelor’s program in Science and Engineering offers all this! It is a cross-disciplinary degree program that provides you with a solid grounding in several core fields of engineering and the ability to follow rapid technological developments and apply scientific methods.

The Science and Engineering program has two tracks: Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Computing and Electrical Engineering.

The major subjects available in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics track are

  • Biomedical Engineering

We offer our students high-quality teaching in relatively small, multicultural study groups where teamwork is strongly supported. In addition to providing a sound theoretical basis for further studies in the field of technology, the program places special emphasis on internationality, employability and connections to industry. With this unique combination, our students are well-prepared for the international world of research and industry.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Technology degree are eligible to continue their studies directly towards a master's degree at Tampere University without having to re-apply. There are multiple options to choose from among the English-taught Masters of Science (Tech) programs offered by Tampere University.

Admission requirements

Eligible applicants hold an upper secondary education certificate:

  • Finnish matriculation examination
  • International Baccalaureate degree (IB)
  • European Baccalaureate degree (EB)
  • Deutsches Internationales Abitur degree (DIA) or Reifeprüfung degree (RP) in Finland
  • A Finnish vocational upper secondary qualification, further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification as set in the Vocational Education Act (531/2017)
  • any other comparable upper secondary educational qualification which provides eligibility for equivalent University-level Bachelor’s studies in the country in question.
  • Or has a right to study towards a university degree in Finland, or holds a degree conferred by a Finnish higher education institution or at least a Bachelor level degree conferred by a foreign institution, Advanced International Certificate of Education degree (AICE) or persons who have previously received an exemption (erivapauspäätös) from Tampere University’s vice president for education (2019) or director of student services (before 2019).

Program content

During the first year of your Bachelor’s studies, you will attend introductory courses and basic courses in key subjects that are important to all engineering students regardless of their major. These include mathematics, physics, chemistry, industrial management, programming and languages. You will progress onto major and minor studies in your second and third year. You will choose one major from four possibilities: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering. Your major will include the Bachelor’s thesis. In addition to your major, you will complete a minor subject module of your choice.

We are committed to investing in new and innovative learning environments and encourage the use of new technological solutions to continuously develop the quality of teaching and learning. The Bachelor’s program in Science and Engineering makes use of various teaching methods. Courses often consist of a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory work, tutorials, group work, assignments, independent study and an examination. Students at Tampere University work both independently and in close collaboration with their fellow students. Besides developing their theoretical and analytical skills, our students learn to work independently, take responsibility for their studies, and become accustomed to communicating and working as part of a multicultural group.

Your eligibility to apply for admission to the different Master's programs offered by Tampere University is determined based on the major and minor subjects included in your Bachelor’s degree.

Tuition

Tuition fee for non-EU/EEA citizens: 10000 € per academic year.

You will not be required to pay the fee if you are:

  • an EU/EEA citizen
  • equivalent to EU/EEA citizen (i.e. citizen of Switzerland)
  • already reside in Finland (a continuous A or a permanent P/P-EU residence permit), or have an EU Blue Card issued in Finland. The exempting residence permit must be valid when you are applying for studies and at least until 1 August i.e. when the study right commences. Please note that a residence permit in another EU/EEA country does not exempt you from the tuition fee.

Study objectives

The Bachelor’s program in Science and Engineering is a cross-disciplinary program that gives you a solid grounding in several core fields of engineering. The major subjects available in the Computing and Electrical Engineering track are Signal Processing and Machine Learning, Software Development, Power Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Electronics and Embedded Systems.

The program equips you with the competence to use scientific methods in your further studies, research or working life and to follow developments in the fields of engineering. By studying in a multicultural group with students from all over the world, you will also acquire strong language, communication and collaboration skills and the ability to operate in a multidisciplinary and international community. Besides providing a strong theoretical foundation for further studies in the fields of engineering, the program places special emphasis on internationality, employability and connections to the industry. With this unique combination, the program makes you well-prepared for the international world of research and industry.

When first admitted to the Bachelor’s program in Science and Engineering you are granted the right to study towards a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree at Tampere University. After completing the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, you will have multiple options to choose from among the Master’s programs offered in English at Tampere University.

Continuing studies

After completing the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, you are eligible to continue studies directly in one of Tampere University’s Master’s programs in English. The subjects and courses studied in the Bachelor’s degree determine which Master’s programs you are eligible for. Studies in at least the following programs are possible:

  • Master’s Degree program in Automation Engineering
  • Master’s Degree program in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering
  • Master’s Degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management
  • Master’s Degree program in Information Technology
  • Master’s Degree program in Electrical Engineering
  • Master’s Degree program in Materials Science and Engineering - Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • Master’s Degree program in Photonic Technologies
