1. Bachelor’s degree - nationally recognized first cycle degree
- an applicable bachelor’s degree at a university or a university of applied sciences in Finland
- a bachelor's degree completed in a university outside Finland which provides eligibility for equivalent University master’s degree studies in the country in which it was awarded.
- with a minimum scope of 180 ECTS credits, three to four years of full-time study
- from a relevant field for the master’s degree program that you’re applying to
- from a recognised institution of higher education
2. A good command of the English language for academic purposes.
Program-specific eligibility criteria
The previous degree should be from a field closely related to the Master's program you are applying to. In the Master’s program in Automation Engineering the previous degree has to be in one of the following (or highly related) fields:
- automation or control engineering, robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, fluid power. We require proficiency in mathematics, physics and strong programing skills.

More than half of the studies in the program involve different laboratory assignments, hands-on exercises, practical learning and the use of machines and devices in innovative learning environments. The program gives you an opportunity to gain both theoretical and practical competencies in the fields of factory automation and robotics. Problem solving, team work, project management are the most important soft skills you will learn.
Compulsory basic studies introduce students to automation engineering and prepare them to pursue more advanced studies. The module also provides students with other necessary skills, such as the basics of the Finnish language and guidance for thesis writing.
To complete a Master's Degree in Technology, you are required to prepare a master's thesis. The thesis carries 30 credits and may be completed in about six months. The topic of the thesis must be related to Factory Automation and Industrial Informatics, or Robotics. Students prepare their master's thesis individually. Your master's thesis is an extensive treatise, which trains you for independent study and research, mastery of scientific methods, the convention of references, and the scientific mode of presentation in a good literary form. The thesis is conducted and written independently but under the supervision of a professor or a doctoral graduate in the field of your major subject.
You can freely select elective courses that are counted towards your degree, such as courses in the Finnish language. You do not have to complete elective courses, if the scope of your degree meets the minimum requirement of 120 credits.

Study objectives
Automation is everywhere in our modern society. Without automation,we would not have electricity, water or heating systems in our homes. Automation technology is used to control both individual machines and entire factories. Robots and vehicles are the most visible examples of applications in which automation engineering has a significant role. Automation is an essential technology when productivity, energy and resource efficiency, and the quality of products are improved. Automation engineers have job opportunities in all the branches of industry, as basic knowledge of automation and systems can be widely applied in the fields of engineering and economy.
The Master’s program in Factory Automation and Robotics, Automation Engineering leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology. The studies in Factory Automation deal with the scientific field of the automation of information (Informatics) in order to build knowledge-based Factory Automation Systems. The studies in Robotics provide you with fundamental knowledge of robotics and related technologies, such as robotics control and sensing/perception systems.
Our graduates are experts in Factory Automation and Robotics. They are prepared to pursue diverse expert, development and management careers.
Continuing studies
You will have the required competencies to pursue a career in industry or continue your studies towards a doctoral degree.
Career paths
After completing the program you will be qualified to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in different fields of automation. During the studies, students develop the expertise to take up different expert, development and management positions in their field. Many of our students do their thesis work at industry or work there as summer trainees.
