Program description

MSc in Materials and Processes of Sustainable Energetics

The curriculum provides education in green energy materials science and engineering with a strong technology component with specialisations on either materials or processes in sustainable energetics. The goal of this programme is to educate specialists who are able to realize innovative ideas and develop new technologies for use in sustainable energy systems.

Specialisation in Materials will concentrate on development and study of prospective materials and structures for solar panels, fuel cells, biofuel, hydrogen energetics, supercapacitors and batteries. Also possible specialization in biofunctional materials, additive manufacturing and nanostructured catalysts for environmental protection.

Specialisation in Processes will teach the different ways to produce renewable energy: solar panel applications, wind energy, hydrogen energetics, district cooling, optimization of energy use and modelling etc.

The programme is connected to the industry and will offer experience in profiled Estonian companies already during the studies (Eesti Energia AS, Roofit Solar Energy, CrystalSol, Utilitas, ABB etc.).

Applicants will need the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in natural sciences or in technical fields (e.g. materials science and technology, chemistry, applied physics, metallurgy, power production and management, mechanics, electronics, etc.)

Program content

Curriculum outline (120 ECTS):

  • General studies - include elective courses about intellectual property, social and ethical aspects of engineering, project and quality management and technology entrepreneurship.
  • Core studies - cover the basics of natural science and engineering (fundamentals of materials science, engineering for natural scientists, etc.).
  • Special studies - students can specialise in Materials of Sustainable Energetics (focus on prospective materials and structures for solar panels, fuel cells, biofuel, hydrogen energetics, supercapacitors, batteries, biofunctional materials, additive manufacturing etc.) or Processes of Sustainable Energetics (focus on different ways of producing green energy: solar energy, biofuel, wind energy, hydrogen energetics, district cooling and heating, optimization of energy use and modelling, energy-saving and management, etc.)
  • Free choice courses - students can choose from a wide variety of courses offered at the university.
  • Graduation thesis - a scientific or engineering project that allows to apply theoretical knowledge to solving practical problems in the field of materials and processes for sustainable energetics.
  • It should be noted the possibility for the international internship and studies in frames of ERASMUS program e.g. student can pass one semester or shorter period in one of our partner universities (Aalto University, Chalmers University of Technology, Uppsala University, Grenoble Institute of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, etc.).

Scholarships & funding

A tuition fee waiver is a scholarship that grants free education based on the points gained in the course of admission. It is automatically awarded to the best candidates according to the points gained in the course of admission. Scholarship is awarded for the whole study period.

Tuition Fee: non-EU - 3600 EUR/year

EU citizens are exempt from tuition fees for this programme.


Graduates of this programme will be awarded a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc).

Career opportunities

After introducing this programme to international students, significant part of the graduates choose to continue their studies at PhD level in TalTech or other universities in Europe or US. Students specialising either in materials or processes of sustainable energetics are in high demand in industries of sustainable and conventional energetics – from contemporary materials application to processes management. A number of our graduates are having a successful career in leading companies and organisations in Estonia and beyond, such as Eesti Energia AS, ABB, Crystalsol, Utilitas, European Space Agency, etc.
