Program description

BSc (Hons) Maritime Transport and International Logistics

The world is now a truly global community with goods moving great distances in response to consumer supply and demand. There is a high demand for the shipment of key commodities such as iron, steel, coal and cement to meet the needs of industrial growth and infrastructure development. Likewise, raw and unprocessed commodities are transported to countries where they are processed and manufactured into goods which are then shipped around the world.

As nations develop, the shipping and logistics industry will also grow to meet consumers’ needs. To manage the movement of these goods there will be a crucial need for knowledgeable and well trained graduates who not only understand the constraints and demands of the industry, but also have the ability to solve problems and provide creative and appropriate solutions. Solent’s maritime transport and international logistics course is designed to meet this need and the growing demand for specialist knowledge in the field of international logistics.

The course equips students with knowledge and understanding of international logistics and supply chain management across all transport modes. There will be particular emphasis on the maritime industry and how other transport modes integrate with shipping on a global scale.

Students are taught by staff with a wide range of experience and knowledge. Students benefit from the mixture of industry professionals and academics as well as from the international outlook of the team. To help develop a good understanding of the subject, staff place a strong focus on learning through application within the real world, demonstrating theory within practice.

Solent’s annual maritime conference is a highlight of the academic calendar and allows students to network with senior professionals and industry experts to make valuable contacts. It also offers the opportunity to listen to a wide range of industry leaders speaking about current maritime issues, keeping students up-to-date with what is happening in the industry ‘right now’. Speakers at previous conferences have included professionals from organisations such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, NYK Group Europe Ltd and the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers.

Students are able to develop their knowledge of maritime transport and its role within international logistics, as well as understand the theory and practice of logistics and supply chain management on a global scale.
