Do you love to code? Are you hoping to pursue a career in gaming? With an intensive focus on developing your C++ and object-orientated programming knowledge, as well as units exploring popular game development platforms like 3D Studio Max, Unreal Engine 4 and Unity, this course is ideally suited to helping you develop the broad range of skills needed to kick-start a career.

Alongside the development of advanced programming skills, this course covers computer graphics, the business of games, employability, project management, and the industry-standard Agile software development methodology. This broad comprehension will put you in the best possible position to find a place in this growing industry after graduation.

Development units remain the primary focus of the curriculum, where you’ll learn the latest programming and engine-based scripting methods from seasoned industry practitioners. You’ll also learn about game design theory, with a focus on producing fun, innovative games.

Solent University is part of the Southern Independent Games Network (SIGN). This network is focused primarily on providing support in areas associated with the business aspects of the games industry including funding, tax, marketing, law and intellectual property. This is carried out through a series of events and web-based resources, as well as by facilitating connections between members of the network and professionals within (and complimentary to) the video games industry.

Students are taught by a team of experienced industry practitioners from various computing and gaming backgrounds.

What does this course lead to?

Graduates have gone on to find roles at games studios including Jagex and Fireproof Games, or business software development companies. Graduates have also created their own companies with help from the University’s business enterprise development scheme. Their work includes commercial simulation, creating gaming apps and winning development contracts from multinational companies.

Who is this course for?

This course is a must for gamers who want to turn their ideas into reality by learning the programming techniques to develop games from concept to production. The course is ideal for aspiring games developers, tool programmers or artificial intelligence programmers.

Admission requirements

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of one A Level minimum Grade D in a relevant subject excluding General Studies and Key Skills, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* or equivalent.
  • A BTEC Subsidiary Diploma will be considered in conjunction with other qualifications.
  • Direct entry to year two may be offered to holders of an HND or HNC in an appropriate subject.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Foundation Year in Digital Arts

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.
