Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

The Bachelor Degree programs in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence aims at providing learners with specific skills in artificial intelligence and the most important areas of applied computing. Graduates in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence will have a solid foundational background as well as technical training. This combination of perspectives will allow them to keep up with the most recent advancements of information and communication technology and provide a basis for a rapid career in the field. In addition, they will be able to access post-graduate programss in the area of information technology. The detailed exposure to the fields of applied computer science and artificial intelligence will equip the graduates with: familiarity with the scientific method of investigation; the ability to understand and make proper use of mathematical tools; methodological knowledge and basic skills in a wide range of fields of science, information and communication technologies, including the most modern artificial intelligence techniques; knowledge of the subject directly in English, so as to be ready to enter the international academic and industry contexts. To this end, the first two years of the programs, designed the same for all students, cover topics that are deemed as indispensable for the cultural and technical training of the graduate, such as mathematics, physics and statistics, computer science and artificial intelligence. During the third year, in addition to completing this training, the student will be able to choose courses that will characterise her profile in the most relevant areas of applied computer science. Furthermore, she will integrate her education path with subjects in economics or law. The programs completes with an apprenticeship, to be carried out either within companies in the IT sector (typically on topics such as software design and development, data analysis, artificial intelligence, systems and networks) or at the university, investigating advanced research issues in applied computer science and artificial intelligence within the academic environment.

Learning outcomes

The basic cultural preparation will allow graduates in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence to have:

  • familiarity with the scientific method of investigation;
  • ability to understand and use supporting mathematical tools;
  • methodological knowledge and basic skills across a broad spectrum of information science and technology and artificial intelligence sectors, including big data and data learning techniques;
  • familiarity with the English language, chosen as the European language of internationalization.
  • Thanks to such solid theoretical, methodological and technological foundations, graduates in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence will be able to:
  • understand the technological evolution and adapt to the progress of the IT disciplines, also through the consultation of advanced scientific and technological documentation;
  • possess good skills and autonomy in the construction of models that are essential for the understanding and formalization of complex artificial intelligence problems;
  • operate in the design, development and management of intelligent digital systems, information systems, parallel processing on local and distributed computer networks, solutions for the security of computing systems;
  • provide technological support to users of computer systems and artificial intelligence;
  • integrate quickly and effectively into a working reality, working both in a group and independently;
  • communicate and argue their ideas about the problems faced and the solutions proposed, both to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors, both national and international;
  • access the next level of studies consisting of the Master's Degrees in the IT area.
  • Graduates in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence will be able to carry out professional activities both in manufacturing companies and in companies using IT systems, operating both in the public and in the private sector, in the following occupational fields:
  • design, organization, maintenance, including evolutionary maintenance and management of software systems, application software, databases, information systems, analysis, decision and prediction systems also based on artificial intelligence;
  • design, organization, maintenance, also evolutionary, of the components supporting the security and reliability of IT systems, including data security and intelligence learned in the machine learning context.

Career opportunities

The professional opportunities of graduates in Applied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence are in the profession, being able to access the state exam for enrollment in the Register of Information Engineers (Professional register - section B of junior engineers - sector of information), in the Public Administration, in companies in the ICT area such as software development companies, development of IT systems or IT services, and in companies that need to use and develop IT tools for the management of their activities.
