Energy Performance of Buildings & Districts Summer School

In this Summer School, you explore the energy efficiency of buildings on a micro-level, and consider districts on a macro-level. You learn about building performance simulation and methods for energy supply of buildings. Dive deeper into energy trading and power plant management.

You master the fundamentals of modeling and simulation to carry out dynamic building simulations. Apply your knowledge in a practical manner: Work on a case study featuring energy efficient technology. Succeed in a business simulation game on energy trading and power plant management.

This course is highly interactive and contain a lot of intensive and fun teamwork. Get an insight into Energy Performance of Buildings & Districts with the following hands-on topics:

  • Lectures & tutorials

  • Plant operation simulations
  • Micro- and macro level understanding
  • Intercultural exchange & social events

Admission requirements

✓ BSc/BE students enrolled at a renowned university
✓ Studying mechanical engineering or a related field
✓ Minimum age to participate is 18
✓ Minimum English language proficiency required

Please note: Interested students should be studying electrical engineering and show strong interests in sustainable technology, especially in the context of energy and buildings. Basic skills in any discipline with a strong focus on energy are beneficial.

We don’t require an English language proficiency test. However, we recommend a self-evaluation of your English language level according to one of the following scores to make sure that you are able to follow the lessons:

  • TOEFL ibt : 72 points
  • IELTS: 5.5 band score
  • TOEIC: 785 points
  • Cambridge: FCE, Grade C
  • CEFR = B2

Program content

Academic content

In this Summer School programme, you will explore sustainable energy technologies, especially in the context of buildings. As a participant, you will learn about building performance simulation and methods for energy supply of buildings as well as energy trading and power plant management. The classes cover fundamentals of modelling and simulation to carry out dynamic building simulations. Furthermore, a case study featuring energy efficient technology and a business simulation game featuring energy trading and power plant management enable students to apply their knowledge in a practical manner. Overall, you will reach an understanding of energy efficiency for buildings on a micro-level, and you will also be able to consider connections on a macro-level.

Tuition fees

The programme fees amount to 1,990 EUR for the two-week Summer School programme.

With our all-inclusive package we provide our participants a carefree stay in the charming historic city of Aachen. The program fees of each on-campus program contain for example:

  • Accommodation (usually 3-or 4-bed rooms)

Qualification

Workload

Have a look at the workload of our Short Courses:
(1 hour = 45 minutes)

  • 2-week programs | about 60 hours
  • 3-week programs | about 90 hours
  • 4-week programs | about 120 hours
    1 ECTS credit can be awarded per 30 hours

Please note: All Short Courses are full time programs! Ultimately it is up to your home institution as to how many credits may be awarded. For details, please speak to your home institution’s Study Abroad Adviser.

Certificate & General Information

At the end of your Short Course, you will receive a Certificate of Participation together with a Certificate Supplement from RWTH Aachen University, stating the workload and the academic contents of your program.

At the end of each course, students will take a final exam or have to complete a project work (depending on the program) to receive a final grade.

Upon successful completion of a program, you will furthermore receive an Executive Certificate from RWTH Aachen University, stating the final grade.
