About this program

BA (Hons) Product Design

This course will teach students to learn cutting-edge research and analysis approaches, develop original ideas with creative thinking and deliver detailed designs that are ready for production.

It is predominantly project-based and explores the functional and market-led requirements of product design from concept to production.

Admission requirements

Students will be expected to have five GCSEs (grade C/level 4 or above) or equivalent (including English), and hold at least one of the below or equivalent UK/international qualifications.

Qualifications accepted:

  • 2 A levels, grade C or above
  • 4 AS levels, grade C or above
  • 2 vocational A levels, grade C or above
  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma, grade C or above
  • International Baccalaureate, 24 points or above

Selection criteria

Students should ideally have a background in art, creative media, or design. Applicants are expected to submit a portfolio of work which shows a range of their skills and demonstrates why they would be a good fit for the course.

We may also consider a combination of portfolio and academic qualifications and take into consideration progress made during studies and/or relevant work experience.

Program content

Students will study the functional and market-led requirements of product design, looking at ergonomics, aesthetics, usability, sustainability, intellectual property and the application of technology.

They will also learn to communicate their design work engagingly through pitch presentations, images and design documents.

The expert lecturers and technicians will provide a unique insight into the market and teach students to identify areas where design could have a significant positive impact in social, economic and environmental contexts.
