Program description

If you’re employed as an adult educator in an academic or workplace setting, this base qualification will build on your knowledge and skills so that you become proficient in your field of work and can promote equitable outcomes for adult learners. Once you’ve achieved the qualification you may be interested in studying towards the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational/Workplace) or The Open Polytechnic Certificate in Designing and Facilitating e-Learning.

What you will learn

When you achieve this qualification you will be able to:

  • design for learning to meet specified learning outcomes in a variety of contexts
  • select and apply facilitation and teaching strategies for diverse learners
  • enhance learning through assessment and moderation, informed by contemporary research
  • evaluate to improve student learning and programme outcomes.

Employment pathways

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge for roles such as:

  • vocational or workplace educator and trainer
  • academic staff member/tutor

This qualification will prepare you for a career in adult and vocational tertiary teaching and training.

Admission requirements

To gain entry into this programme you will need to be involved in training and have access to at least six adult learners, either in a workplace or community-based organisation. To confirm you meet the on-the-job requirements of the programme, you will be asked to provide details of your employment in adult education or workplace training as part of the enrolment process.

(Access to adult learners/trainees means that you are able to train adult learners towards a specific skill or that you are involved in on-the-job training. Contact us before applying to enrol if you’re unsure about the above.)

IELTS test – an Academic score of 5.5, with no band score lower than 5.

Cambridge English Qualifications - B2 First or B2 First for Schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skills.
