Our French course allows you to study the French language, country, politics and culture through a selection of lively options, including modules which examine cinema and literature. LINGUISTICS at NTU will enhance and directly influence your understanding of human communications, identities and how language constructs and constrains meaning within various societies. French at NTU has been created to ensure a quick learning progress of the French language and an in-depth understanding of the societies and cultures in which it is spoken. You'll also have the exciting option to either work or study in France during your third year. This course will help you to gain an impressive communicative skill whilst developing your accuracy and fluency. You'll quickly enhance your language skills through the use of French language classes which will explore culture, society and politics. To help improve your career prospects you'll be able to take a final year module that will develop your translation and interpretation skills. 95% of our French joint honours undergraduates are in work or further study within just six months of finishing their degree (DLHE 2015-16). Linguistics will provide you with the knowledge which is required to analyse language on a larger and more detailed scale, paying attention to the power that language has to construct meaning in societies. You'll learn language structure, the study of meaning and the social functions of language. To study this course we will not expect you to have prior knowledge of grammar; foreign languages; or technical terminology. You'll examine the latest developments in clinical linguistics, media discourse, child language acquisition and research in languages and gender and then be taught how to carry out research like linguists do. This joint honours degree will prepare you for a range of national and international careers by equipping you with the necessary tools to analyse language. You'll gain a critical understanding of French politics, culture, society and progress within written and verbal communication of the language. You'll be able to understand the power that language has to construct and constrain interpretation in our worlds. Both subjects will strengthen your writing and understanding of the English language and French language. Recent NTU undergraduates have pursued exciting careers within; the United Nations, UK government departments and international charities. Other have found work in public relations, law, journalism, script writing and as speech language therapists.
