Program description

Extend your artistic talent with the New Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design (Level 4).

This inspiring hands-on, studio-based programme will allow you to explore and expand your skills in a range of visual arts and design mediums. You will gain a solid grounding in a range of design and arts media as well as art and design history. It is an excellent staircasing programme for entry into the Bachelor of Applied Arts degree.

What you will learn

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Apply fundamental practical, conceptual and research skills in the production of arts, craft and/or design work.

Select and apply creative processes, methods and technologies to solve problems in response to a brief.

Manage projects/briefs under broad guidance, apply standard work practices, and describe potential education and employment pathways in arts, craft and/or design.

Select and present work in context, communicate ideas, and analyse work within conventions and contexts in arts, craft and/or design.

Career pathways and opportunities

This qualification can lead to the Bachelor of Applied Arts.

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to fill junior assistant and/or support roles in arts and/or creative industries, such as designers, technicians, machinists, or salespeople.

Admission requirements

All applicants must:

be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level

be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

IELTS test: General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 20); Cambridge English Examinations: FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; NZCEL: Level 3 with an endorsement of General, Workplace, or Academic; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PToE (Academic) score of 42; City & Guilds IESOL: B2 Communicator with a score of 42.
