Program description

SAELL

The School for the Advancement of English Language and Learning (SAELL) was established in 2013. SAELL was designed for non-native speakers of English who have a strong desire to improve their English proficiency. Our mission is to holistically build our students' English proficiency to help them succeed in their future academic, professional or personal use of English.

SAELL at Northeastern uses the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR) to measure English language proficiency. Because our levels were founded upon the CEFR bands and standards, our students can expect that their English language study with SAELL will be internationally recognized according to CEFR standards.

In each SAELL level, teachers prepare students for undergraduate and graduate study at Northeastern Illinois University or other higher education institutions. Students complete tasks relating to their future academic study. All courses focus on improving students’ reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills in an integrated manner.

Admission requirements

Students are placed into their level of study based primarily on a CEFR proficiency test or their most recent TOEFL test score. Some course assignments may vary based upon individual skill area scores. The TOEFL test is given to all new full-time students during their first orientation week.
