Program description

The New Zealand International Commercial Pilot Academy is accredited to provide the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Aeroplane) (Airline Preparation) Level 6 by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 250 of the Education Act 1989.

This course is a Level 6, 294 credit qualification which is approximately 104 weeks in duration - including holidays. This course includes a CPL, Multi Engine Instrument Rating as well as the ATPL theory exams.

This course would ideally suit those students that wish to pursue a career as an Airline Pilot with graduates of this course being qualified commercial pilots, able to exercise the privileges provided for by CAANZ in New Zealand. They will hold valid written examination credit covering the airline transport pilot licence theory subjects and will be ready for airline multi-crew flying operations or work in associated roles and industries.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve a Commercial Pilot Licence with type and instrument ratings (entitling the holder to legally operate an aircraft in New Zealand for commercial purposes), complete the theory requirements for an Airline Transport Pilot licence and prepare for airline multi-crew flying operations.

Content

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theory subjects including;

  • Air law, flight navigation general, and meteorology, principles of flight and aircraft performance (Aeroplane), general aircraft technical knowledge (aeroplane), and human factors.

Flying practical and flight tests for CPL covering:

  • Knowledge of ground examination subjects as above, and
  • Knowledge of the privileges & limitations of a CPL, and
  • Technical & operational knowledge relevant to the aircraft type used in flight tests, and
  • Competence to operate the aircraft, and
  • Control of the aircraft at all times ensuring successful outcome of procedure or manoeuvre is never in doubt, and
  • Competence in radiotelephony.

Instrument rating including (may be either SEIR or MEIR);

Air law, navigation & flight planning, instruments & navigation aids

Competency for night flying & instrument flying for night flying privilege

Competency for an appropriate type rating

Airline Transport pilot Licence Theory subjects including;

Air law, flight planning, flight navigation, instruments and navigation aids, meteorology, advanced aerodynamics performance & systems, and human factors

Readiness for airline multi-crew flying operations.

Outcome

Graduates will be qualified commercial pilots, able to exercise the privileges provided for by CAANZ in New Zealand, hold valid written examination credit covering the airline transport pilot licence theory subjects and are ready for airline multi-crew flying operations and any other employment options in the various branches of aircraft operations and support roles.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for entry to this programme, applicants must:

  • Hold NCEA Results (NCEA Level 2) OR a pass in all PPL subjects gained over a period of not more than 42 days where no more than two subjects have been failed, no one subject failed more than twice.
  • Hold an Aviation Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • Provide a Land Transport Driving History Report
  • Provide a Ministry of Justice Report
  • Successfully complete the ADAPT Online Pre-screening Tool
  • Meet the ‘Fit and Proper Person’ requirements of NZCAA
  • Provide a letter outlining your interest
  • Provide three references (2 oral and 1 written)
  • Attend an interview at NZICPA
  • Complete an internal Maths and English Entry Test

In addition, international students must:

  • Must be 18 years of age or over
  • CPL Licence for the appropriate category of aircraft
  • Have an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher
  • Hold a valid Student Visa (a visitor’s visa is not acceptable)
  • Hold valid Medical and Travel Insurance
  • Provide a copy of Passport
  • Provide a Passport Photograph
  • Attend a Skype interview
