Program description

New Zealand Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Multi-skilled) (Level 5)

With this program, you’ll work closely with adventure operators to gain experience in the adventure tourism industry.

As an Adventure Tourism student, you will call the diverse wilderness areas of the Top of the South (and sometimes beyond) your classroom.

NMIT has conveniently located a short distance from three awesome National Parks (Kahurangi, Abel Tasman, and Nelson Lakes). While there are a number of classes on campus, you will also often be out and about hiking, rafting, rock climbing, sea-kayaking, skiing, snowboarding or canyoning.

Admission requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Applicants under 20 years of age:
    • A minimum of 48 credits NCEA at level 2 across 4 subjects (at least 12 credits in one subject), or
    • New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Multi-skilled) (Level 4), or
    • Demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge.
  • Applicants aged 20 years or above:
    • No academic qualifications are required. Evidence to support an applicant's ability to successfully undertake the program with a reasonable likelihood of success may be requested.

English language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years, or a qualification considered to be equivalent to the above.

Program content

The program is structured into 15-credit courses that can be studied full time (part-time in block courses). A combination of on-campus classes and overnight trips are required.

We get started early in the year, to make the most of the summer weather! Our courses are applied and practical in nature. You can expect at least 80% of your learning to take place in the outdoors.

First year

To complete this Diploma, most of our students pathway from the Certificate in Adventure Tourism and Guiding and then you can pathway onto the Diploma in your second year.

If you believe you have the relevant skills and experience to pathway directly into the Diploma, by to discuss your options. Please note that entry directly onto this program will require you to present evidence demonstrating you have the skills and knowledge that correspond to the learning in the Certificate program.

Second year

This 120 credit Diploma is the second year of study for most students. Building upon the skills you gain in your first year, graduates from this Diploma can obtain industry tickets in most disciplines, for a career as a professional Adventure Tourism guide.
