Nelson, with its busy port and thriving boat culture, is a great place to gain the skills in seamanship and hospitality you need to work in the global superyacht industry.

Our programme

During this twelve week programme you will learn a wide range of skills which will prepare you for anything life as a superyacht crew member can throw at you.

Offering the use of world class learning facilities, local charter yachts, powerboats, simulators, live restaurant and bar, luxury accommodation and the only course in NZ giving you two multi day yacht trips to get to grips with living at sea.

Internationally recognised

You will gain internationally recognised qualifications from worldwide training associations such as RYA - Royal Yachting Association (UK), PYA - Professional Yachting Association (France), STCW – Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (international), as well as the IMINZ – International Maritime Institute of New Zealand, Certificate in Superyacht Crewing.

Hands-on

This programme is highly practical with learning taking place mostly together as a class group. There are also some online learning components and self-directed study.

Admission requirements

Academic requirements

Students are required to complete international qualifications equivalent to New Zealand NCEA Level 1 or 2 qualification. Entry requirements vary from country to country.

English language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level.

Those students, whose first language is not English, are required to demonstrate:

An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic band score of at least 5.0 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 20)

University of Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill

Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 36

City & Guilds IESOL - B1 Achiever with a score of 43

Other requirements

Students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of attending the PSI311 Professional Superyacht Interior Training course.
  • Be physically capable of undertaking crew duties aboard a vessel. This requires a General Practitioners medical certificate. This certificate must be submitted at the interview.
  • Demonstrate motivation to work in the superyacht or maritime tourism industry.
