Program description

Combine creative thinking with technical expertise and carve yourself a career in animation and computer generated imagery for film and television, game design and more.

Through this three year programme you will develop a wide range of skills and knowledge related to animation and computer generated imagery (CGI).

You will gain experience using industry-standard animation and CGI software and processing for projects.

This programme is designed to give you the skills you need for employment in the CGI industry, and in the creative and cultural sectors, or in other sectors where CGI is used.

Choose from three majors

Specialise in your area of interest.

  • Animation
  • Visual Effects
  • Technical Development

You don't need to choose your major until your second year. The first year of the degree will give you a broad introduction to all the different majors, so you can make an informed decision about what you want to do in your second and third year.

Animation

Learn to combine your creativity with the technical skills of animation (motion, behaviour, expression) to produce animated works. Come up with innovative ideas to appeal to a range of different audiences. You will learn to produce and present your animation work to a professional standard.

Visual Effects

Learn how to express natural dynamic changes in computer generated imagery with visual effects. You will produce creative and innovative works using the latest visual effects techniques and software. You will learn to produce and present your projects to a professional standard.

Technical Development

Learn to create innovative custom scripts and specialist tools to meet a range of different CGI production needs. Learn to create the tools for an efficient pipeline for animation/film/game development, including the incorporation of augmented reality (AR) and/or virtual reality (VR). You can choose to focus on animation or real time (AR/VR)

  • New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 6)
  • Bachelor of Computer Generated Imagery

Admission requirements

Students are required to complete international qualifications equivalent to New Zealand NCEA Level 3 qualification. Entry requirements vary from country to country.

Applicants aged 20 years or above no academic qualifications are required.

English language requirements:

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those students whose first language is not English must have:

An International English Language Testing System (IELTs) overall academic score of at least 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each band), issued within the last two years or equivalent.

TOEFL Paper based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE)

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)

University of Cambridge English Examinations: FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill

Pearson Test of English (Academic): PToE (Academic) score of 50

City & Guilds IESOL: B2 Communicator with a score 66
