About this program
Master of Social Sciences (Communication)
The National University of Singapore (NUS) Master of Social Sciences in Communication, hereafter referred to as the MSocSci (Communication), is offered by the Department of Communications and New Media in the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
In a relentlessly volatile media landscape shaped by technological advances and content proliferation, media professionals must be agile to keep pace with constant change.
Today, content is king, holding court on digital platforms that reach millions of people every day. The challenge for organisations in this age is to harness the power of content and wield it strategically to communicate effectively with their stakeholders.
The MSocSci (Communication) recognises that competency gap in the market, and is proud to be the first graduate programme to fill that void.
We provide mentorship to groom our students into leaders in the digital field, and equip our graduates with cutting-edge expertise to firmly grasp the essence of data in their communication plans.
Program content
Take the first step towards achieving those long-held aspirations by choosing from one of three specialisations:
Strategic Communication Specialisation
A message can be powerful, moving and impactful—but only if the messaging is on point, wrapped in a tonality that engages people but does not put them off, and the delivery precise.
That concept is easier said than done, as seen in the many public relations (PR) crises that plague companies worldwide even though their intentions were pure.
The Strategic Communication specialisation track of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Master of Social Sciences in Communication (MSocSci (Communication)) programme will examine the concept of communication itself, and cutting-edge methods and concepts to manage crisis communications and improve relations and reputations through digital marketing channels.
This specialisation track is suitable for leaders and executives who are in corporate communications, public relations, and practitioners from all industries.
Data and Communication Specialisation
The advent of the Internet, Big Data and its collection and analysis has led us to a world where information is more than just binary numbers.
Rather, those lines of information can now help connect better with one’s target audiences and strategically influence the decision-making process for more optimal business results.
The Data and Communication specialisation track of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Master of Social Sciences in Communication (MSocSci (Communication)) programme comprises of modules to help communication professionals remain relevant in changing times by learning about data visualisation, social media and analytics, studying that data and understanding it, and then building a positive narrative with it.
This specialisation track will be suitable for leaders and executives who are in corporate communications, public relations, journalism, and arts.
Global Media Communication Specialisation
Communication across transnational social and political boundaries can be challenging due to different cultures and laws. When messages have to be pushed out to different geographical markets, one size does not fit all.
The Global Media Communication specialisation track of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Master of Social Sciences in Communication (MSocSci (Communication)) programme will delve into the social and political sensitivities behind the media and digital space in Singapore, Asia and beyond.
On this track, students will get an Asian perspective, learning about the region's historical communicative contexts, while maintaining an innovative, global outlook to prepare them for the world stage. They will examine cutting-edge methods and concepts which can be adopted to facilitate such flows, especially within a global media and communication industries framework.
This specialisation track will be suitable for leaders and executives who are working with/in global media businesses and industries connected to the Asian market.
