Program description

Master of Communications and Media Studies

There has never been a more important or exciting time to study the mediated world.

This course builds your understanding of the changing contexts of media and communication practices. You will gain insight into the key issues affecting the communications and media industries and you will examine these developments from cultural, political and theoretical perspectives.

This course develops an advanced understanding of the contemporary communications and media environment. It is suitable for those pursuing careers in a wide range of communications and media roles, including in the areas of communications, media relations, social media, digital engagement, public policy and public relations.

You will have the opportunity to engage with local practitioners and industry experts via guest speakers, case studies, internships and site visits. You will also have the opportunity to conduct in-depth analysis of contemporary media industries, issues and organizations.

The duration may vary depending on prior qualifications as 1 year/1.5 years/2 years (full time).

English entry requirements

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50
  • TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18

The course is structured in three parts:

  • Part A. Core master’s study,
  • Part B. Advanced expertise, and
  • Part C. Specialist studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will:

  1. analyze key contemporary trends, issues and challenges shaping the contemporary communications and media environment;
  2. investigate challenges and opportunities for the communications and media industries and assess their impacts on wider contexts, including culture, politics, business, public administration, and everyday life;
  3. skillfully and appropriately communicate those insights to a variety of potential audiences in written, verbal and other media formats;
  4. work skillfully, thoughtfully and professionally as peers and team members, able to lead, collaborate and critique;
  5. undertake advanced independent research employing research methodologies and professional ethics.

Continuing studies

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree for students admitted at entry levels 1 and 2 completing the research thesis (24 points). Students admitted at entry level 3 will normally already have an honors degree, however, students in this group who wish to complete a research thesis in communications and media studies should discuss the options with the course coordinator.
