Program description

Bachelor's in Nutrition Science

There is a need for nutritionists who can explain the science underpinning the relationship between diet and disease to the general public. That's why studying a Bachelor of Nutrition Science at Monash is such a healthy investment.

As a Nutrition Science graduate you will be able to pursue a career in the food industry, nutrition research, food and health policy or public health and provide eligibility for dietetic studies. The Bachelor of Nutrition Science at Monash is the only program in Australia accredited with The UK Association for Nutrition (AfN). Graduates are eligible to register as Associate Nutritionist in the UK and recognised in the UK and Europe for employment. Graduates are also eligible to apply for membership of the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA).

High achieving students (an ATAR of 90 or above) can apply to be admitted to the Bachelor of Nutrition Science Scholars Program, which provides a direct pathway to a Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) accredited course enabling graduates to apply for accreditation as dietitians. Students who do not qualify for the Scholars' program may be offered admission to the Bachelor of Nutrition Science and, as graduates, will still be eligible to compete for entry into the 1.5-year Masters in Dietetics at Monash. The details are in the special note below.

As a nutrition student you'll examine the broad scope of food in society and gain in-depth knowledge of nutritional and biomedical science from specialists in dietary intake and metabolism, public-health nutrition, functional foods, sports nutrition and exercise science, body composition, and hunger and satiety. The challenges associated with the increase in chronic disease in our society will feature prominently.

Your knowledge will be enriched through extensive practical study. You'll learn how to assess dietary intake, experiment with the composition and chemistry of different foods, and gain awareness of the complex regulatory requirements relating to food. You may focus on nutrition research, public-health nutrition or get out into the field with a food-industry placement.

Some of your research projects will place you in the innovative Be Active Sleep & Eat (BASE) facility. BASE boasts a fully equipped commercial kitchen, sleep lab, exercise and fitness suite and our most sophisticated piece of equipment; the iDXA in the body composition suite.

As a graduate, you may be eligible to apply for registration as a nutritionist through the Nutrition Society of Australia, the peak body recognising the highest professional standards in nutrition. If you'd like to further your academic career, the Master of Dietetics is an excellent choice.

Professional recognition

This is the only Australian nutrition program accredited by the UK Association for Nutrition, enabling you to apply for registration as an Associate Nutritionist (ANutr). Graduates are also eligible to apply for registration as an associate nutritionist with the Nutrition Society, Australia.

Students admitted to the Bachelor of Nutrition Science Scholars Program and who complete the Bachelor of Nutrition Science with an average grade of credit or above are guaranteed entry into the Master of Dietetics with credit that means the Master's can be completed in 1. 5 years full-time. Graduates of this combined 4. 5 year program will be awarded a Bachelor of Nutrition Science (Scholars Program) and the Dietitian’s Association of Australia (DAA) accredited Master of Dietetics. Graduates of the Master of Dietetics are eligible to become members of the DAA and to join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Program.

Students who do not qualify for the scholars' program, upon completion of the Bachelor of Nutrition Science will be eligible to compete for entry into M6002 Master of Dietetics and potentially graduate in 1.5 years.
