Doctoral (PhD) Studies

Ph.D. studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Masaryk University are among the most prestigious and the best at the University and in the Czech Republic. In 2020, the University was ranked in the top ten universities in the QS Emerging Europe and Central Asia Ranking.

Faculty of Medicine offers free of charge Ph.D. studies in the English language in study programs that cover almost the entire spectrum of biomedical sciences and clinical medicine:

The student‘s most important duty during the Ph.D. study is systematic work on a doctoral thesis project, which results in summarizing its outcomes in the doctoral thesis. The student conducts research during the studies independently as well as together with his or her supervisor; the purpose of this research is to fulfill the goal that was set and is completed by a successful defense of the doctoral thesis before an expert committee. In order to complete the studies, it is also necessary to pass the doctoral state examination and fulfill other faculty requirements.

The Simulation Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University

SIMU provides a brand-new approach to teaching General Medicine and Dentistry. SIMU is complementing the existing curricula with a unique aspect of acquiring individual skills and procedures by means of simulators. During your studies at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University you can enjoy a rare chance to experience the interconnection between medical simulations and clinical practice at faculty hospitals. This five-story student hospital is loaded with healthcare and simulation devices and accompanied by one the largest and best-trained teams in the field. It is under the guidance of this team that you will get right in action and experience what you would have formerly experienced only after several years of studies or in medical practice.

Admission requirements

The applicant who holds a certificate and a degree from a foreign higher education institution demonstrates the proper completion of studies in the Master's degree by:

  • a foreign document on foreign higher education from countries with which the Czech Republic has concluded a so-called equivalence agreement;
  • a foreign document on foreign higher education for the verification by the faculty;
  • a certificate of recognition of foreign higher education submitted together with a foreign document on foreign higher education.
  • A foreign document on foreign higher education is usually a diploma or a certificate of completed studies.

Calls for applicants are held twice a year (September-October / December-February). Students are expected to have a good background in the field as well as sufficient language skills to understand fully the study materials. The faculty encourages applications from all students and does not discriminate on the basis of national origin, race, gender or religion.

Program content

The basis of the doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the MU is the procedural pursuit of preparation of the doctoral thesis in close and regular interaction with the tutor and supplemented by the faculty-wide applicable terms for completing the postgraduate studies.

Before the defense of the doctoral thesis is performed, the following conditions need to be met:

  • fulfill the requirements of the given individual study plan
  • complete at least 5 fields of study courses of a common basis

The common courses encompass the stated fields of scientific knowledge and capabilities. They can be completed as a part of the organized courses at the MU (with cooperation with CEITEC, Faculty of Science, etc.) or through the analogical external courses (e.g. The Course in the Fundamentals of Research Work Administered by the CAS).

The fields of study courses with a common basis include:

  1. Scientific Information, medicine based on evidence (e.g. the Medicine Based on Scientific Proof course)
  2. Ethical and legal aspects of research (e.g. the Bio-medicinal Research Ethics, Law, Ethics and Philosophy in Science courses)
  3. Organization of research projects and clinical trials (e.g. the Planning, Organisation and Evaluation of Clinical Studies courses)
  4. Data analysis (e.g. the Analysis of Clinical Data courses)
  5. Publication, presentation and grant-related skills (e.g. the Art of Research and Scientific Writing courses)
  6. Computer Network User
