Program description

MA in Applied Linguistics

The Master's in Applied Linguistics provides a broad-based course of study in language description (language systems: grammar, lexis and phonology), theories of Applied Linguistics, theories of Second Language Acquisition, frameworks for the study of discourse, sociolinguistics, as well as specialist research skills for the empirical analysis of language in context. While its main focus is on the use and teaching of the English language in a global context, it will address a national and international need for professional development among language teachers and language professionals.

Admission requirements

EU Applicants

  • Download and complete the application form
  • Please pay the non-refundable €50 application fee using Realex,and return the completed application form by email
  • In the case of non-native English speakers, a copy of your IELTS results (or equivalent) is required.

Non-EU Applicants

Entry requirements and the application process vary according to country of origin.

Transferring from another 3rd Level Institution

The transfer route into MIC depends on the content overlap of your new and old course and the number of places on the new course in the year you apply. Before submitting an application you should contact MIC and we will consider your case with the relevant Head of Department of the course you wish to transfer to.

EU/Non-EU Status Assessments

The designation of a student as being from the EU or a Non-EU country determines the fees they will pay at MIC, i.e. there may be cases where a non-EU national acquires EEA citizenship during the course of their third-level studies and would qualify for EU fees for example.

  • Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
  • Academic Writing: Lexicogrammar and Discourse

Semester 2

  • Dissertation (20,000 words)

Scholarships & funding

International scholarships are not available. Third-level education in Ireland is already heavily subsidised by the Government so our tuition fees are already lower than other countries and directly benefit the student.

Program delivery

The MAAL is aimed primarily at Language Teachers and other language professionals. To offer the optimum flexibility, the course is offered in two possible delivery formats: fully online or blended (a combination of face-to-face and online delivery).

The aims of the MA in Applied Linguistics are to:

  • Enhance the professional knowledge of Language Teachers and language professionals by focusing on the core features of language (grammar, lexis and phonology)
  • Develop participants’ ability to utilise theoretical frameworks for the analysis of discourse to enhance their ability to address specific language-related real-world problems concerning the learning, use, teaching and assessment of language
  • Provide a broad understanding of the key issues and debates in language teaching and learning
  • Develop specialist skills in the empirical analysis of language in context using corpus linguistics

Continuing studies

The program can also create a structured pathway to further research at doctoral level, which is essential for a career in teaching and researching at third level.
