Song writing

The Bachelor of Music in Composition is a professional degree designed for students wishing to pursue a career as a songwriter in the music industry. Graduates of this program are qualified songwriters who are well versed in many genres of commercial music. Each student develops their own voice and is ready to compete as leaders in the competitive and ever-changing landscape of the music industry.

Admission requirements

Audition Video

Perform two (2) original songs. In at least one (1) of the songs, applicants must demonstrate the ability to accompany oneself, utilizing piano or guitar as the accompanying instrument. One of the two songs can be a co-write, and if so, please explain your contribution to the song

Lyric Sheets

Submit lyrics for each of the two (2) original songs performed in the audition videos. Please submit each lyric sheet as a PDF.

Submit an audio sample of a completely original song concept (at least 0:45 in length). Include a short summary of the song elements: lyrics, song concept, production, etc

Please Note:

  • The Admissions Committee is looking for live performances giving thecommittee a sense of what would be heard in a live audition setting.
  • It is imperative you can be seen and heard at the best possible quality.
  • Your videos must not be produced, edited, or be given any effects. Overlyproduced videos will not be evaluated and will need to be re-submitted.
  • Applicants may not utilize any pitch correction (auto-tune) of any kind, andshould utilize minimal production (reverb/effects)

Program content

Department Learning Outcomes reflect the mission and learning outcomes of the institution, the academic program and to the acquisition of skills that are specific to a concentrated field of study.

  1. Proficiency in Composition: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of musical structure and harmonic language by composing original songs that display expertise in melodic and harmonic form and musical arrangement.
  2. Proficiency in Lyric Writing: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the style and structure of lyric composition and the ability to write original lyrics that display expertise in poetic form and content.
  3. Performance Proficiency: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to proficiently sing their songs and accompany themselves on guitar and piano using innovative chord and rhythmic patterns in support of the melodic structure.
  4. Foundational Music: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in music theory, basic keyboard techniques, contemporary music history, the influence of world cultures on traditional and contemporary song, and conducting.
  5. Professional Creative Practices: Students will be able to demonstrate competency in the professional knowledge and practice of live performance musical direction and arranging, recording studio techniques, and computer technology.
  6. Professional Business Practices: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and competency in music industry business practices including budgeting and contracts, publishing, marketing and promotion, performance showcases and entrepreneurship

Qualification

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Music program in Songwriting, students will:

  1. Development of their own original material, as well as instructing on the art of writing and pitching successfully toward other established artists.
  2. Produce and record their original songs in LACM’s state-of-the-art studio facilities
  3. Constant contact with the top industry members available in the Los Angeles area.
  4. Recieveoutstanding abilities along with a full network of active contacts.
  5. LACM is uniquely positioned to provide access to major artists, producers, music supervisors, publishers and more.
  6. Armed with a solid catalog of competitive material along with a network of music and entertainment professionals to further their career goals.
  7. LACM prepares you for the music industry and what goes beyond school.
  8. Therefore the course includes a Music Business subject which allows one to learn the fundamentals of business models and more.
