Program description

Artist Diploma - Brass & Woodwinds

The Artist Diploma is Longy’s highest performance credential. Offering full-tuition remission, admission is offered to exceptionally gifted performers who show outstanding promise for a professional career in music.

For music to thrive, the world needs change-makers who will question and dream about what comes next. While the desire to keep the canon of masterworks alive is laudable, it is no longer enough. Longy, in turn, places its primary focus on preparing students for a meaningful life in music.

Wanted: Musicians who possess a keen desire to disrupt the status quo; who wish to contribute to society and be part of music’s evolution; who will join other artists in forging that future.

Longy’s Artist Diploma program offers the opportunity for emerging musicians to craft, design, and curate artistic projects over a two-year residency period. The program is designed for exceptionally gifted musicians who demonstrate great potential to impact and change the world by challenging norms and breaking the mold.

Brass & Woodwinds Major

Guided by Longy’s experienced faculty mentors, Brass and Woodwinds students build upon technical training to diversify and expand their skillsets to navigate the professional world. Students participate in solo, chamber, and orchestral performances, from classical staples to custom-commissioned contemporary music. By engaging in courses that feed into Longy’s broader mission of social justice and music equity, graduates emerge as well-rounded musicians who are capable of changing the face of classical music–and changing the world.

Program content

Create Your Own Gigs!

In this course, students will be led systematically through the process of creating a concert from beginning to end. How do you write a bio? What’s a press release? Who do you send it to?

Ensemble Uncaged

Ensemble Uncaged, Longy’s premier contemporary music ensemble, will perform a wide variety of 20th- and 21st-century works by a diverse array of living and (recently) dead composers.

Studio Lessons

Collaboration with a faculty mentor is the cornerstone of conservatory education at Longy. Together you will explore your unique artistic and professional goals while expanding technical and musical insight.

Master Classes and Seminars

Through workshops, master classes, discussions, and mock auditions, frequent seminars offer insight into interpretation, orchestral and ensemble repertoire, and performance practice. Through a special partnership with Celebrity Series of Boston, emerging artists in its Debut Series present exclusive workshops and master classes with Longy students throughout the year.

Chamber Music

Georges Longy’s belief in the power of collaboration inspires the central role of chamber music in our conservatory. You will work closely with faculty coaches every semester and explore ensemble playing through coursework, informal readings, and community outreach.

Pedagogy

We believe that teaching should be a form of heightened, enlivened communication. Rather than focusing solely on acquiring pedagogical skills, we seek to draw out your latent expertise and help you communicate authentically. Students are placed in partnering schools and youth music organizations for a teaching practicum.

Orchestral Repertoire

Courses explore the standard orchestral repertoire, focusing on technique and style. Particular emphasis is placed on orchestral audition preparation.

Longy Conservatory Orchestra

The Longy Conservatory Orchestra presents six concerts and one opera per season, exploring a wide range of repertoire encompassing baroque and contemporary music in addition to the classical and romantic canon.

Teaching Artist Program

Required of all students, this two-semester program includes active learning experiences, discussions, foundational readings, and interactive presentations. It culminates in student-designed and student-led musical projects in various community venues throughout the Greater Boston area.
