Program description

Mathematics and Computer Science (Including Foundation Year) BSc (Hons) (Full-time)

Why study this course?

Our Mathematics and Computer Science (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) will open up opportunities for you to enter a career in computer science or in roles that require strong maths skills. It’s ideal if you’d like to undertake an undergraduate degree but don’t meet the necessary requirements to enter the standard three-year course.

This is a four-year course with a built-in foundation year that is designed to equip you with the skills and confidence to begin undergraduate study. On graduation you’ll receive the same award and title as students on the standard course.

Our Mathematics and Computer Science (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) is focused on providing you with skills that are applicable in the real world of work. On this bachelor’s course you'll learn the fundamentals of software development, programming languages, how to develop and analyse mathematical arguments and solve problems.

During the foundation year you’ll gain vital study skills, plus fundamental knowledge in mathematics and computer science. In your lectures and seminars you’ll be immersed in the world of computing, as you’ll learn about different mathematical theories, get a solid foundation in the design of products in areas covering everything from communications to robotics, and learn how to recognise basic cyber threats. Your foundation year will be shared with students from other foundation year degrees, so you’ll get to learn alongside students with other academic interests and with different perspectives on computer science and mathematics.

After completion of the foundation year you’ll join students on the standard three-year bachelor’s degree, you’ll also have the same choice of modules and study the same content as them. To find out more about the subsequent three years of your degree visit our Mathematics and Computer Science BSc (Hons) course page.

If at the end of your foundation year you’d like to change your specialism, there will be some flexibility to do so.
