Program description

Jewellery and Accessories BA (Full-time)

Why study this course?

Our Jewellery and Accessories BA (Hons) degree is a highly creative course, perfect if you want to make an exciting career out of your passion for adornment. The course will prepare you for a career as a jeweller, gallerist, curator, stage prop designer/maker, silversmith or fashion accessory maker, as well as setting you up for postgraduate study.

Our students have won various awards including the Paul Podolsky Award for Best Creative Collection, the Simon Benney Award for Technical Skills and the Richard Akehurst Award for Technical Achievement as well as significant University prizes each year. Our alumni include hundreds of practising jewellers currently working as professional independent designers and makers. We are proud to see our graduates in the collections of museums, at high-end fashion shows and in the windows of galleries all over the world.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the possibilities in contemporary jewellery and accessories through your modules. Your learning will be enhanced thanks to the School’s established links to industry, as well as engagement in national and international live projects and events. You will be expected to take part in professional briefs and to experience real work challenges including placements, competitions and events, such as International Talent Support and London Fashion Week.

We provide the chance to visit craftspeople, fashion designers and manufacturing companies to broaden your understanding of the context of your work. You are even able to participate in overseas visits – recent trips have included the USA, Germany and Egypt. Our next trip is to South Africa for our exhibition in Johannesburg.

You will benefit from the expertise of current practitioners and teaching staff as well as from our intensive Program of visiting speakers who enrich the University atmosphere, encouraging discussion and the exchange of ideas. These will become part of your network of connections, in turn offering an easier pathway to success on graduation.

This degree course will give you a clear mission to discover your own creative identity and passion, with results in the form of working prototypes and models through to finished objects. Our excellent studios and workshops allow the broadest possible range of options in traditional and digital technologies. Workshop-based equipment includes precision and pillar drills, laser and micro welders, hydraulic presses, enamelling kilns, leather working tools, hat formers, 3D printers and much more.

During your final year on this Jewellery and Accessories course, you will work to complete your professional portfolio of projects, which you'll use for an exhibition in our annual graduate show. You are encouraged to develop entrepreneurial opportunities during the course. You may participate in subject-specialist work placements. You will also gain professional experience appropriate to your discipline throughout the course. Previous work experience placements have included companies such as Kelvin J Birk Jewellery, Simon Harrison, Aston Martin and Saatchi and Saatchi.

When you graduate your CV and portfolio will be full of records of events, exhibitions and exciting projects that will demonstrate your creativity and expertise to prospective employers and establish your own future as a designer and maker.
