Earn an LLM in Advanced Studies in International Civil and Commercial Law
The international civil and commercial law advanced studies program is offered by the Institute of Private Law at Leiden Law School. It is taught by expert academic staff as well as by visiting guest lecturers who hold senior positions in major corporations.
Teaching in the master of laws advanced studies programs is highly interactive with small classes, and Leiden University encourages the exchange of ideas between students and lecturers.
The program focuses on both high level theory and professional skills and includes the following courses:
- International Contract Law (including International Transportation Contracts and Procurement Law)
- International Property Law (including Intellectual Property Rights and Finance Transactions)
- International Tort Law (including Private Competition Law)
- International Corporate Law International
- Insolvency Law
- Private International Law
- International Commercial Arbitration
- Litigation Legal Profession and Ethics
You will also participate in three business workshops supervised by academic staff and experienced legal professionals. The program benefits from the high-level research conducted by the lecturers.

As a student of the advanced studies program in international civil and commercial law, you will benefit from the opportunity to participate in a course from Leiden's Law School programs in addition to your core curriculum.
The extensive network of the faculty and staff can help facilitate internships, which are not part of the program. The Institute of Private Law’s extensive library, as well as the library of the nearby Peace Palace (The Hague), to provide students with ample resources during their studies. The opportunity to participate in the Willem C. Vis Moot Court Competition on international arbitration is also available to students.
The program is offered full-time (one academic year) and part-time (two academic years), both with daytime classes. Part-time students are offered the same facilities and courses as full-time students. Each course is concluded with an examination. Students are expected to make regular contributions throughout the courses and are required to prepare oral and written presentations. For non-European students, however, the part-time option is not possible because of visa requirements.
