French Summer Courses

If you are a beginner in French and you would like to improve your level before coming to live and study – then our summer courses are the perfect solution.

20 hours of intensive beginner French lessons per week – taught by Bilingual Professors.

As well as 4 days a week of intensive French lessons, you are also provided with accommodation and guided tours around the South of France.

Sea and sun… the proximity to Italy, Cannes and Monaco… EDJ Nice is the perfect place to mix studies and pleasure!

We offer pre-sessional French for academic purposes, as well as beginners French for leisure. The course is aimed at people who need a basic level of French, enough to be able to live in a city such as Nice.

(This course is therefore available to anyone who wants to improve their French level, with a view to be able to work and study in a French speaking country. The course is also a prerequisite for MA students of EDJ as a pre-sessional course to improve their French to a B1 level.) Lessons are taught at the School of Journalism, a renowned school in France that attracts students from all over the world!

Program content

Topics and Module Aims

The aims of this module are: To stimulate students’ curiosity about French Language and French culture. To familiarise students with key cultural and social issues in French Language countries (including journalistic issues) and to develop their awareness of cultural differences in general. To enhance students written and oral skills as required for language production; presentation, discussion, and summary in everyday life and in second year study. To make students phonetically accurate when speaking in French.

Our schools offer a modern and effective teaching method delivered by qualified teachers, with well- planned and motivating lessons adapted to all language levels and designed to allow for maximum interaction between the teacher and students.

Indicative Syllabus

  • Introduction to the social customs and habits of French Language cultures through analysis and discussion of a variety of texts and media
  • Introduction to the issues, questions and cross-cultural understanding likely to arise while travelling in the French Language country.
  • Issues of cultural and historical importance in French Language countries ? including, for example, geography, history, politics and media-arts – through analysis of a variety of texts and media
  • Communication and presentation of factual information and arguments
  • Phonetics and pronunciation
  • Travel to Nice and surrounding areas in the South of France to experience the gastronomy, sights, museums, beaches and much more.

Grammar (non-exhaustive):

  • Articles: definite, indefinite and partitives
  • Interrogation and negation
  • Gender and number: nouns and adjectives
  • Adjectives: possessives and demonstratives
  • Various prepositions
  • Verbs: imperative, present, perfect and future; reflexive verbs

Topics (non-exhaustive):

  • Self and family: introducing oneself, stating name, age, nationality etc… and talking about the family, describing members of the family
  • World of work: professions, holiday jobs
  • Home and the environment: describing house/flat, towns and villages, finding the way around town
  • Shopping: buying food, clothes
  • Talking about leisure activities
  • Holidays and travel: buying train tickets, using various means of transport, booking various types of accommodation. Staying in Nice, sightseeing, some francophone countries, Food and drink.

Program delivery

20 hours of teaching a week

Classes take place from Monday to Thursday, from 9am to 4pm with a maximum of 12 students per class. Fridays are dedicated to the guided tours around the South of France with an anglophone tour guide and other international students.

  • 9-12 : Grammar in Context (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing Skills)
  • 2-4 : Introduction to French Culture and European News in French
