Master of Food Technology
The objective of this master is to provide a multi-disciplinary and specialized professional education in food technology, with special emphasis on postharvest and food preservation engineering on the one hand and food science and technology on the other.
The InterUniversity Program in Food Technology (IUPFOOD), a Master of Science in Food Technology Program, is jointly organised by the faculties of Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven and Ghent University (UGent).
Admission requirements
The IUPFOOD Program is oriented towards international students from all countries, it in particular recruits students (engineers and scientists) from the South with at least an academic Bachelor of Science degree.

After admission procedure
On the basis of the following degrees, or similar degrees, obtained in the Flemish Community:
- Master in de biowetenschappen: voedingsindustrie
- Master in de industrile wetenschappen: biochemie
- Master in de industrile wetenschappen: chemie
- Master in de industrile wetenschappen: milieukunde
- Master in de industrile wetenschappen: land- en tuinbouwkunde
- Master in de industrile wetenschappen: voedingsindustrie
- After admission by the Educational Committee.
After a preparatory Program
On the basis of the following degrees, or similar degrees, obtained in the Flemish Community:
- Bachelor in de biochemie en biotechnologie
- Bachelor in de chemie
- Bachelor in de ingenieurswetenschappen: chemische technologie
- Bachelor in de industrile wetenschappen: chemi
- Bachelor in de biowetenschappen
- After a preparatory Program (based upon evaluation of a complete application file by the Educational Committee).
- Other academic bachelor degrees in sciences or biomedical sciences will be evaluated by the Educational Committee.
International degree students
International applicants must have obtained an academic Bachelor of Science degree (in countries in the South typically a 4-year Program) in a discipline related to the content of the Program from a recognized University, College or Institute. Candidates are expected to have basic science training (demonstrable in the transcripts) in each of the following fields:
- mathematics and statistics,
- physics and engineering,
- chemistry and biochemistry,
- biology and microbiology.
They must have obtained their degree with an end result of at least second class upper or equivalent.
Each application is evaluated by the Educational Committee for admission.
English proficiency
Applicants are fluent in English (reading, listening, speaking and writing). All applicants who have not obtained a previous diploma in a Program taught in English in Australia, English-speaking Canada, the Caribbean Islands, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America must submit a certificate proving their proficiency in English. Applicants need to have obtained a score of at least 79 on the internet-based TOEFL test (sent by ETS) with scores of at least 18 on all components, or a score of at least 6.5 on the IELTS test (sent by the official IELTS center administered by The British Council or IDP Education) with scores of at least 6 on all components.

IUPFOOD alumni are typically employed in academic institutes (37%) as teaching and/or research staff, private industry (20%) mainly in quality related jobs, governmental institutes (7%), non-governmental institutes (2%) and research institutes (2%).
About 27% undertake further PhD studies and this group of alumni mainly ends up in academic institutions.
In the long term, a large part of the IUPFOOD alumni (75%) are involved in education, research, and service in academic institutes, research institutes and governmental institutions creating a true nucleus for multiplier effects of their knowledge in particular in their home countries in the South.
