About this program

KU Leuven's Advanced Master of Cultural Anthropology and development Studies (CADES) brings together students and professionals from all over the world, involved in consultancy, policy, education and research in the international development sector. It offers you a large international and interdisciplinary platform to deal with development issues from an anthropological perspective.

What is the Advanced Master of Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies all about?

This programme is rooted in contemporary social and cultural anthropology. It draws both on research conducted at the Institute for Anthropological Research in Africa (IARA) and the Interculturalism, Migration and Minority Research Centre (IMMRC) and welcomes a variety of perspectives to enhance students’ multi-disciplinary and intercultural expertise and skills. You can choose elective courses from the following disciplines and thematic specialisations:

  • architecture and urban planning
  • economics
  • gender studies
  • post-colonial theory
  • comparative religion
  • agriculture and engineering
  • education
  • politics
  • psychology
  • philosophy

international 

During the programme, students have the opportunity to carry out an internship and acquire international experience. The internship can be included in the curriculum provided that it covers at least 6 weeks and starts after classes have finished (end of June). Students taking up the internship can only complete the CADES programme after 1 and a half years.

career opportunities 

As a holder of a CADES degree, you have a scientific, critical, and culture-sensitive understanding of development. You are able to relate domain-specific knowledge in the constantly evolving North-South debate, and in organisations that defend, project or evaluate collective and cultural interests, expectations and movements. You will have the tools to understand and deal with development from the viewpoint of local realities, cultures and knowledge systems.
