Program description

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. You would start this course with the Business Foundation Year. This gives excellent preparation for a wide range of subjects relating to business, management, accounting, finance and economics. The programme consists of a set of modules that has been approved by Keele Management School. Following completion of the Business Foundation Year, you would begin a Finance (Combined Honours) course. A Combined Honours course means you will study Finance with one other subject area, allowing you to gain a wider range of expertise by the end of your course. You can choose which subject to combine Finance with from a range of pre-selected Combined Honours choices. Visit keele.ac.uk/ugcourses/ to see the full list of combinations available.

During the Finance element of your combined degree, you will study accountancy with a specialism in finance, exploring the design and use of accounting and financial systems and how they are affected by individuals, organisations, markets and society. The Finance modules are designed to help you better understand the theories leading to the design of financial institutions, the services they provide and the products they sell. The topics covered range from optimal portfolio creation and management, to project appraisals and financing, to risk management through the use of such derivatives such as options, futures and swaps.
Drawing on economics, law, management, mathematics, statistics and IT, you will build your understanding of business strategy, behaviour and performance in the global context. Our computer laboratories, equipped with Bloomberg terminals and Sage accounting software, will enable you to interact with real-world data and situations. You can also choose to build on this practical experience by opting to take a placement year between years two and three of your studies.

Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. A high percentage of business leaders have finance backgrounds, and accounting has one of the highest graduate employment rates. With the increasing internationalisation of business and the capital markets, you will have extensive opportunities. You might work as a chartered accountant, chartered certified accountant, chartered public finance accountant or chartered management accountant. Or you might work as a commodities trader, stockbroker, management consultant, banker, financial or tax advisor or insurance broker, or go on to study at master’s or PhD level.
