Program description

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too.

The American Studies and Film Studies degree at Keele allows you to explore the profound and complex history of this nation, alongside the major art form that, for much of the world, both defines and is defined by it. Drawing on the expertise both of Keele’s pioneering American Studies department and its youthful Film programme, this combined honours degree looks at America from a wide range of approaches – political, cultural, geographical , across topics such as slavery, imperialism and presidency – together with in-depth study of cinematic history and theory, from the era of classical Hollywood to contemporary global cinema.

Studying America and film from this perspective will enable you to grasp the contexts and forces that have shaped both the nation and cinema, both in Hollywood and across the world. The U.S has shaped the world in which we live. Film has shaped the ways in which we see it. Find out how America’s cultural and political power in the twentieth century, and its evolving place in the twenty-first, owes much to the power and influence of its movies.

Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. You will leave with an ability to research, write and think critically about both the past and today’s world: a strong basis for employment in areas such as curating and museum conservation, journalism, marketing and advertising, or education.
