Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX)

The Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) provides a multidisciplinary and innovative approach combining Imaging, Lighting and Information Technology. The objective is to educate students in advanced technologies, methodologies and practical applications with two goals: to improve the career prospects of graduates and to meet the needs of industry and society. Students will develop professional and social skills useful in both a European and Japanese cultural context. Graduates will have competences in: Extended reality (XR): Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality (AR, MR, VR), industrial environments with robots and complex elements, Imaging, Rendering and Lighting.

IMLEX is one of the first Erasmus Mundus Master Joint Degree Partnerships with Japan. The consortium consists of four full partner universities: University of Eastern Finland (UEF), Université Jean Monnet (UJM, France), KU Leuven (Belgium), and Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT, Japan). Each student will take studies in three partner universities. 

Admission requirements

The Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality targets students who have obtained a Bachelor's degree in: 

  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Photonics
  • or a related field 
    with good grades issued by an internationally recognised university. 

Applicants must have sufficient English language proficiency (TOEFL iBT 92, IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE 62 OR Bachelor's or Master's degree conducted in English language).

Program content

The Erasmus Mundus - Master of Science in Imaging and Light in Extended Reality is a two-year programme corresponding to 120 ECTS.

All IMLEX students start their studies in September forfundamental courses of semester 1 at the University of Eastern Finland. In semester 2, students choose their preferred track: Computational Imaging at Université Jean Monnet (France), or Lighting at KU Leuven (Belgium).

The second study year, semester 3, starts in Japan at Toyohashi University of Technology, with topics of Lighting and XR / Imaging and XR. Semester 4 is dedicated for the Master's thesis in one of the partner universities or in the industry.

The programme is completely taught in English. Students are encouraged to study the local languages, especially Japanese.

Tuition fees

The consortium fees for IMLEX are:

  • 4000 EUR for students from the Erasmus+ programme countries*
  • 8000 EUR for students from the Erasmus+ partner countries**

*) Erasmus+ Programme Countries are EU countries+ the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Turkey.

**) Erasmus+ Partner Countries include all other countries except the countries listed above.

Scholarships & funding

Erasmus Mundus scholarships, covering tuition fee, insurance and a contribution to travel and housing costs, are available for non-EU and EU students. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The amount of the scholarship varies according to your nationality. All IMLEX applicants are considered automatically as Erasmus Mundus scholarship applicants.
