Advanced Master of Innovative Health Technology

The development of novel technologies has long been a key driver in the advancement of modern health care. Technologies that better enable medical doctors, therapists and other care providers to identify symptoms, perform diagnoses, carry out surgery, cure diseases, programme therapy and follow up patients’ progress.

Today, there is a global industry developing novel technologies to further advance contemporary health care. The Advanced Master of Innovative Health Technology aims to contribute to this evolution by offering students the opportunity to specialise in this versatile and diverse domain, where they will learn to design, develop and implement practical and pragmatic technological solutions for the healthcare sector.

This programme has a specific focus on the integration of different technologies and methodologies into usable systems. Recent trends in wearable sensors, bioelectronics, artificial intelligence, robotics and healthcare apps are combined to inspire students to conceive and implement novel integrated solutions that can be tested and used by patients and health care professionals.

Admission requirements

The Advanced Master of Science of Innovative Health Technology targets students who have already completed a master’s programme in (bio)engineering technology or equivalent. Admission is based on a selection procedure which includes an interview.

Candidates are required to submit an application containing a CV, academic achievements, a motivation letter and proof of English proficiency.

Program content

The Advanced Master of Science in Innovative Health Technology is an international programme, benefitting from the international network of Group T Leuven Campus and its international academic staff. This network includes universities, high-tech companies and internationally renowned institutes such as the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (imec) and the University Hospitals Leuven.
The Advanced Master of Science in Innovative Health Engineering is a one-year programme corresponding to 60 ECTS.

It consists of eight course units:

  • One course on the human body
  • Four courses focusing on engineering technology
  • One on entrepreneurship 
  • One team-based project
  • A master’s thesis combined with an internship

Tuition fees

The tuition fee for the current academic year is €6,000 for all students.
This amount may be partially covered (max. €4,500), depending on the company or institution where students complete their internship or Master's thesis.
Tuition fees for future academic years may be higher as a result of indexation.

Scholarships & funding

Group T – Academy, a private organisation affiliated to KU Leuven, provides in some scholarships, covering: tuition fee, travel, housing and living expenses in Leuven.

Scholarships are awarded to young bright staff members of international partner universities, aiming at the development of affordable health technology in less affluent regions.

Career opportunities

Recent scientific and technological advancements in healthcare have created numerous new roles, functions and job opportunities in medical technology companies, healthcare institutes, hospitals and research centres. These include areas such as patient identity management, healthcare mobility and business intelligence, applied medical research, designing, developing and testing of prototypes and installations and configuration of medical instruments, etc.

In the field of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), there is an increasing demand for experts to provide policy-makers with evidence-based information on the medical, economic, organisational, social and ethical issues related to the use of health technology.
