Combine health and technology with a joint degree
The Master's in Health Informatics degree from Karolinska Institutet (KI) is for students with an interest in information technology (IT) or engineering who want to apply this knowledge to the medical/healthcare field. Students will learn how to make public and private healthcare systems safer through the creation of efficient, high quality computer-based information and management systems.
Students will receive a joint degree in Health Informatics from Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, two world-leading universities.
The following topics will be covered during each semester:
Semester 1: Students with technical backgrounds will take courses in basic medical sciences and healthcare organisation. Students with medical backgrounds will learn about basic computer and systems sciences.
Semester 2: Covers basic health informatics methods for users, standardisation within health informatics, and clinical decision support.
Semester 3: Students have the opportunity to take elective courses either at Karolinska Institutet or Stockholm University. Alternatively, students can take courses at any foreign university that KI has an existing collaboration with.
Semester 4: Concluded with a thesis paper.
General admission requirements for the Master's in Health Informatics from Karolinska Institutet:
- A bachelor's degree or a professional degree equivalent in healthcare, biomedicine, medical technology, computer and systems sciences, informatics, or the equivalent
- Proficiency in the English language should be documented by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL; level of knowledge must be equivalent to English B at Swedish upper secondary school

Tuition fees for the Master's in Health Informatics programme at Karolinska Institutet:
- Citizens within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland: No application or tuition fees
- Non EU/EEA citizens: Application fee is 900 SEK; tuition is 330 000 SEK total
Limited scholarships are available at Karolinska Institutet for international fee-paying students. The scholarships can only be applied for once per year.
