Bioinformatics and Genetics (PhD)

Biology, biotechnology and biosciences have been rapidly developing since 2000. To handle the data produced, computer technology is required due to the excessive amount of data. Most of the recent techniques used in DNA, RNA and protein based research is supported by bioinformatics and computer science. The computer science offers a new era for the biological sciences. For example the building block of the cell, proteins are modeled in 3D using computer; this enables the rapid and efficient identification of molecular interactions and signal transduction pathways. Similarly, mutations in the genetic sequence can be detected quite fast using the computer technology. Since the recent advancements in computational biology decreased the cost and accelerated the research processes including the drug development, the in silico studies are highly demanded in industry.

The young scientists having PhD from our department will have strong background on molecular biology and genetics, analyze the biological data using bioinformatics tools, develop tools, algorithms, and design drug candidates using computational biology techniques such as molecular modeling and simulations. This program is similatly close to basic science, translational science and applications in the sector.

Admission requirements

The applicants of the program are required to hold a M.Sc. degree and to have scored at least 55 in the quantitative section of Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) and 65 in the Interuniversity Council Language Examination (ÜDS or YDS). ALES score requirement is not applicable to international students. International language examination (TOEFL, etc.) scores are acceptable for all applicants according to the equivalencies as imposed by the regulations of the Higher Education Council. The applicants fulfilling these requirements are further interviewed.

Tuition fees

$12,000 per year


Upon successfull completion of the program, students will be awarded with Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics and Genetics (The Qualifications frameworks in the European Higher Education Area, QF-EHEA: Level 1, European Qualifications Framework (EQF-LLL): Level 6).

Program outcomes

  1. To be able recognize structure of organic molecules, to be able to model and visualize by graphics in detail.
  2. The ability to find the interaction between structures and enzyme kinetics of the organic molecules, and to use this interaction for advanced drug design and to assign drug activity.
  3. The ability to do molecular modeling and dynamic biological system simulation using statistics, physics, bioinformatics and computational biology methods, and/or programming languages.
  4. To understand and the ability to conceptualize advanced cell biology, genetic structure, heredity, genome, evolutionary mechanisms and systems biology.
  5. To be able to investigate the scientific problems in computational biology and bioinformatics; the ability to design experiment, to conduct experiment, to collect data, to analyze data, to get the results and to interpret, independently, or as part of a group.
  6. To be able to follow the developments in bioinformatics and genetics with a critical point of view; the habit of monitor progress an awareness of life-long education.
  7. The awareness and responsibility in professional, environmental and quality issues.
  8. To ability to communicate on scientific topics, verbal and written, in English.

Graduates of this program will be able to use the latest computer technology in order to solve a problem about a biological system and mathematical thinking ability. Thus, various career opportunities from different fields are possible for our graduates, such as biotechnology companies, RD departments of pharmaceutical companies, genetic research labs, criminal investigation labs, agriculture, research labs of hospitals, academia, energy and enviroment sectors.
