Program description

Summer School in Science and Sustainable Development

The Summer School in Science and Sustainable Development consists of various interdisciplinary modules that can be combined with each other and other summer modules offered at ITMO during the summer of 2020. 

Program content

Module 1:

1. Bio & Art: Biomaterials in Art

Learn about the aesthetic potential of microbial cellulose (MB), vegetal fibers and philosophical implications of working with leaking, growing, hybrid bodies in artistic practice that stands against climate change. Compare laboratory protocols and DIY techniques for cultivating G. hansenii and investigate the aesthetic and design potential of MB. Develop innovative ideas and address issues of sustainability, ethics, and aesthetics of working with living organisms.

2. Digital Humanities  

The school presents the way data affect society, raises critical questions about cultural data, its interpretation and visualization. The school comes to grips with programming, data analysis, and visualization. The program includes workshops and lectures delivered by guest experts related to data mining basics, Python programming, metadata analysis and visualization. 

Module 2: 

Science Communication: Climate Communication and Sustainability

The school covers the basics of science communication and interaction between science and media in the framework of sustainable development and climate change. The school will analyze popular science texts and teach them how to make research understandable. Participants will gain confidence in communication efforts, understand how to promote research via media and science events, and how to speak about controversial scientific issues to the general public. 

Module 3: 

Science Communication in Life Sciences

The school fosters participants’ communication and research skills by introducing the basics of science communication and its interaction with the media. The school will include studying science podcasts, science visualization and storytelling, immunization, vaccination, and other Life Sciences topics. Gain confidence in communication efforts, learn to promote research via media and science events and speak about scientific issues to the general public.

Module 4: 

1. Bio & Art: Migration of Microorganisms

The essence of the school is movement and migration. People move around the world, shifting their identities and cultural traditions. Sometimes, migration happens beyond people’s control, like war or natural disasters. The school teaches how to culture Physarum polycephalum in Petri dishes and collect the electrical activity of the organism. Students will link the data to the topics of migration and identity, discuss important topics and talk with migrants in Russia. 


2. Digital Humanities

Tuition fees

The fees for this course are €200 for 1 week, and €150 per week if you enroll for 2-4 weeks. 

Qualification

1 week – 2 ECTS, ITMO official certificate
