Master's degree in Sociology (English or Portuguese)
The Master degree in Sociology at ISCTE-IUL was the first one created in this scientific area in Portugal.
It enables the preparation of highly qualified professionals, able to add specific value as technicians and senior managers, directors or experts, teachers and trainers, in a very wide range of areas of activity, as well as researchers and PhD candidates.
This Master aims at promoting an in-depth and specialised training in understanding contemporary society. That training focuses upon the contemporary society's structures and institutions, its processes and agents of change, the current social problems and individual and collective forms of action pertaining to that society. It simultaneously encloses the global society level and the local social contexts.
This Master is addressed to graduates in Sociology. It is also addressed to graduates from other scientific areas that are interested in obtaining a specialized sociological training. For these students there are optional courses of introduction to sociology, sociological theory, research methods and data analysis.

The Master in Sociology in English language runs for two years (four semesters, corresponding to 120 credit units) and is organized around a common core that includes compulsory courses of sociology and methodology, allowing for expertise in seven areas:
- Communication and Culture
- Education
- Health
- Human Rights
- International Migrations
- Theory and Methods
- Work and Employment
The reference to one of these areas in the diploma is attributed to those who wish a focalized training in that specific area and complete at least two courses in that area.
There are courses in sociological theory and epistemology available for those who want a reference in theory and methods in their diploma, or wish to follow a doctoral programme.
Program delivery
Lectures will be taught in two classes, one in Portuguese and another in English language.

Full tuition fee for EU students: 2100 EUR
Full tuition fee for Non-EU students: 4600 EUR
