Social Work

The Master's Degree in Social Work provides in-depth studies in the field of Social Work through the broad understanding of its theories, methodologies and technical support tools for the Social Worker's intervention and research.

This Master's develops scientific, technical and relational skills, qualifying the intervention of professionals in national and international social contemporary questions and problems.

The curriculum is divided into compulsory and elective ECTS in social issues (6 ECTS), specialized research techniques (6 ECTS) and free electives (12 ECTS) obtained by choosing second and third cycle curricular units, in any scientific area. This training consolidates knowledge on the fundamentals of Social Work, human rights and ethics in the context of contemporary social inequalities. It also deepens knowledge in the field of social policies and specific intervention in Social Work.

This curriculum culminates with the elaboration of a dissertation or project work oriented towards research and the enhancement of professional practices in the scope of Social Service.

Program content

The preferential target of the master's in Social Work are students who have concluded the 1st cycle of training, as well as professionals, technicians and decision-makers operating in the scope of social work, either at the level of central, regional and local administration or in the third sector, in private organisations of social solidarity or non-governmental organisations.

The objectives of the Master's in Social Work are:

  • To deepen Social Work knowledge;
  • To develop scientific and theoretical-methodological skills, so as to promote the pursuance of advanced studies in Social Work;
  • To apply knowledge of Social Work in the understanding of the social problems and policies of the professional intervention and organisational/institutional contexts;
  • To know the methodologies of intervention with individuals, families, groups and communities;
  • To provide the development of critical, analytical and reflective thinking on intervention, within the framework of research and knowledge production in Social Work.
