Economics and Public Policies
What is the role of the State in the regulation of the Economy? How may Economic Policies promote Development? These are the questions that have concerned the Economists ever since the advent of this science and that the global crisis of 2008 compelled to be rethought. The curriculum of the Master's in Economics and Public Policies was designed so as to answer those questions, highly relevant in the Portuguese society, and to approach the problem of Public Policy efficiency and its intervention instruments.
Generally speaking, the Master's in Economics and Public Policies intends to develop skills related to the conception, management and assessment of public policies and operational programmes. The professionals who graduate from this Master's will be qualified for the intervention in the domain of Competitiveness and Cohesion Policy, in particular regarding Policy of Territorial Competitiveness and Cities, Policy of Knowledge and innovation and European Development and Cohesion Policy.
From the thematic viewpoint, the Master's in Economics and Public Policies is focused on three primary domains of the European Union's and Portuguese public authorities' agenda: economic competitiveness, innovation and Governance conditions. These three domains are dealt with both in the public policy theoretical-conceptual and operative-instrumental dimensions, using as geographic contextualization scale the large spectrum that goes from the European strategic perspective to the perspective of the Territory as integrating space of public policies.
Considering its characteristic features, this Master's is intended for people with manifold interests and profiles, economists or not. In the previous editions the demand has been centered in professionals from the area of public policies, but in the last years the number of students devoid of professional experience, with 1st cycle courses with 180 ECTS (in Economy or Sociology, for instance) has increased, who intend to exercise their professional activities within the sphere of Public Policies, either in Central and local Administration entities or in associations or non-governmental organizations.
The Master's in Economics and Public Policies' academic staff brings together people with a recognized academic curriculum and people external to ISCTE-IUL with a vast experience as policy-makers. This academic staff profile has revealed as a very positive point in the students' pedagogical evaluation, with a systematic emphasis on the quality, theoretical updating and capacity of practical articulation between the academic staff members.
