Master's degree in African Studies (in Portuguese only)
The Master in African Studies is one of the oldest and most prestigious in both Europe and Portuguese-speaking territories. It is structured in such a way that students acquire a comprehensive and interdisciplinary vision of the main political, social and cultural issues and dynamics of diverse contexts of Africa and the diasporas.
The Master exists since 1989 and is designed to provide training to professionals from diverse fields: research and teaching, business sector, diplomacy, national and international organizations, public administration and Civil Society Organizations. In addition to the scientific specialization, the course has a strong focus on professional competencies, where students may develop research and internships in public and private institutions with which protocols are established.
Divided into two thematic areas - "Globalization and International Politic" and "Development Challenges and Programs" - the Master in African Studies has 120 ECTS, corresponding to a two-year study cycle.
It is promoted by the Department of Political Science and Public Policies (DCPPP) of the School of Sociology and Public Policy (ESPP) and has as its research unit at the Center for International Studies (CEI-IUL), which promotes several scientific activities with a regional focus in Africa, such as the monthly seminar "Pensar África".

Students have the possibility to do internships, which will allow them to acquire professional skills in various areas and to also further develop their master's dissertations. Students also have the option to develop their research in articulation with the Center for International Studies (CEI-IUL).
Upon completion of the Master in African Studies, students are prepared to further their professional careers in diverse fields:
- teaching at different levels of education
- scientific research
- diplomacy
- analysis and planning of projects
- advising on national and international organizations (public institutions, international institutions, NGOs, other organizations)
- political and social media advice on African issues

Full tuition fee for EU students: 3000 EUR
