Energy and Environmental Economics

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with theoretical and empirical knowledge on energy and environmental economics that will enable them to understand and take action.

At the end of the course, participants are expected to:

  • Develop a comprehensive overview of the main challenges facing the energy sector, together with a detailed analysis of the main policy issues;
  • Review worldwide relevant regulatory experiences in the energy sector, including recent competition policy cases;
  • Provide a deep understanding of the main recent concepts and tools regarding the performance of energy markets;
  • Recognize the role of energy financial markets and learn with experts in the field;
  • Understand the role and challenges of renewable energy sources for sustainable development.

Program content

  • Develop a comprehensive overview of the main challenges facing the energy sector, together with a
    detailed analysis of the main policy issues.
  • Review worldwide relevant regulatory experiences in the energy sector.
  • Learn about recent competition policy cases in the energy sector and the lessons derived from them.
  • Understand the impact of the existing regulatory framework for operators in energy markets.
  • Provide a deep understanding of the main recent concepts and tools regarding the performance of energy markets.
  • Learn to assess the relevant trade-offs posed by current developments of energy policy.
  • Recognize the role of energy financial markets and learn with experts in the field.
  • Acquire knowledge about the functioning of energy facilities and financial trade in energy markets.
  • Infer about the role and the contribution of renewable energies to energy and environmental economics.

  3. Fossil Fuels and Other sources
    (Sources and Scarcity, Challenges faced by fossil fuel energy sources, Environmental protection and
    emissions, Dependence and substitution)
  4. Energy Finance and Markets
    (Energy Markets, Derivatives Options in the Trading Scheme, Commodities as Financial Assets, Low
    Carbon Investments, Research Methods for Energy Finance)
  5. Regulation and Competition in Energy Markets
    (The Effect of Renewables and other Low-carbon Policies on Emissions, Policy Implications in a World
    with Renewables, Limited Dispatchability and Fixed Prices, Electricity Storage Challenges, Non-linear
    Pricing, Biased Consumers and Regulatory Policy, Regulation and Policies in Energy Markets)
  6. Energy and Sustainability
    (Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Emissions Trading Schemes, The Links Between Trade
    and the Environment, How to Modify National Accounts to Reflect Resource Depletion and Pollution,
    The Optimal Management of Natural Resources)
  7. Electric Mobility
    (Current market status, Challenges and Advantages, Business models for electric mobility, Electric
    mobility in Europe, Energy transition: fossil and renewables challenges related to energy mobility)

Assessment:

  • Class participation: 15%
  • Cases preparation and discussion: 15%
  • Group project: 70%

Teaching Method:

Students are encouraged to participate actively in class discussions. The teaching methodology includes (a)
lectures, (b) discussions, (c) case studies, (d) experts seminars and (e) participation in class. Students will have the
opportunity to meet regulatory institutions in Portugal, visit energy facilities and talk with experts in the financial
trading market
