MSc Investment & Wealth Management

MSc Investment & Wealth Management is a one-year, full-time programme designed to prepare students for careers in investment, private equity and asset management.

Our programme provides a strong theoretical grounding and draws on some of the world's best research in asset pricing. It is also highly applied, allowing you to find solutions to real-world investment challenges with a strong emphasis on programming and implementation of investment strategies. Many lectures are delivered by highly regarded practitioners, and you will have the opportunity to complete an Applied Project, or take part in a work placement.

Admission requirements

To apply for MSc Investment & Wealth Management you should have a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree from a recognised university or the international equivalent in a quantitative discipline such as:

  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Mathematics
  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Business

There are no specific 'A' Level criteria, but many banks and companies in the financial sector have very strict grade requirements for their graduate programmes. We strongly recommend that you research the entry requirements of any companies you are interested in working for.

Prerequisite knowledge requirements

All students commencing the programme are expected to be proficient in probability, calculus, matrix algebra and real analysis.

You should use the Quantitative Experience Statement' on the application form to list the most advanced quantitative courses that you have taken in your academic career to date and to provide brief examples of the relevant topics covered by the programme.

Most applicants meet the requirement in one of the following ways:

  • IELTS (academic): A minimum score of 7.0 with minimum scores of 6.5 in all elements. The IELTS indicator test will be accepted for admissions to the 2020/21 academic year.
  • TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 100 overall with minimum scores of 22 in all elements. The ETS at Home test will be accepted for admission to the 2020/21 academic year.
  • Duolingo English Test: 125 Overall with no less than 115 in any band score
  • Degree studied in and awarded by an English-speaking country and successful performance in an English language interview, conducted by the Business School's Global Skills Consultants, which would be arranged if you receive an offer.

Program content

Develop a solid financial knowledge base through core modules, which build rapidly on previous experience while introducing new and challenging disciplines.Each module comprises 27 hours of lectures.

Asset Allocation and Investment Strategies

This is an advanced elective in investments and portfolio management. You will discuss the key trading strategies used by hedge funds and demystify the secret world of active investing. The module combines the latest research with real-world examples and explores several different strategies in depth, including fundamental tools for investment management, dynamic portfolio choice, equity strategies, macro strategies, yield curve logic and arbitrage strategies.

Derivatives

In this module you'll learn to develop and apply the techniques learnt in the Investments and Portfolio Management module to the pricing of a range of financial derivatives and to the determination of interest rates at different maturities. By the end of the module you'll have an in-depth understanding of valuation techniques applicable in a variety of financial markets and sought after by prospective employers.

Financial Econometrics

This module will acquaint you with a range of econometric techniques which are an essential part of modern advanced empirical research. The module will be taught through a series of formal lectures, classes and computer based exercises. You will learn to analyse data from any source using a wide variety of techniques.

Ethic and Professional standards in Finance (Online Module)

This online module aims to introduce students to corporate responsibility and professional standards for financial analysts. You will be taken through a review of the key factors and responsibilities for ethical practice in finance. At the end of the module, you will have a compulsory test, which must be passed before you can be awarded the MSc.

Investments and Portfolio Management

This module provides you with a critical understanding of techniques used for investments and portfolio management. The module is accompanied by case studies and realistic practical examples that you will solve each week using R. By the end of the module you’ll be able to implement trading strategies and portfolio construction methods in a wide range of assets.

Macroeconomics

An introductory macroeconomic module which will emphasise areas particularly relevant for investment decision making. By the end of the module you'll have an understanding of fundamental economic concepts, and the effectiveness of both monetary and fiscal policies in stabilising the business cycle, particularly in the context of the recent financial crisis.

Mathematics for Finance

Success in modern finance requires a solid grasp of mathematics. This module introduces you to a range of essential mathematical tools and their financial applications. By the end of the module you’ll be ready to excel in any area of finance.
