MSc in Applied Economics (MScAEcon)

The Master of Science in Applied Economics (MScAEcon) is a one-year full-time programme that equips students with economics knowledge to analyze the changing world economy.

The programme integrates economic theory with applied economic analysis, and will enable students to understand the economy of China and the world. The curriculum is designed to provide students the flexibility of choosing electives for pursuing career in applied economics or future research-oriented studies. Graduates will be equipped with analytical skills and techniques for analyzing business and real world problems from the economic perspective. Our graduates are trained to be competent economic analysts in business corporations, public organizations and financial institutions. Outstanding students are offered scholarships and merit-based awards.

Opportunity to Work in Hong Kong

Practical Business-oriented Curriculum

The curriculum consists of practical components in different aspects covering risk management, corporate finance, economics of digital markets and big data analytics.

Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor degree from a recognised university, or equivalent. Although a bachelor degree in economics or related areas is not a pre-requisite for admission, the applicant is expected to possess the knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics, with some training in mathematics (especially in calculus and linear algebra) and statistics.
  • Proof of English proficiency is required for applicants whose first degree were obtained from non-English-medium institutions. This can be fulfilled by obtaining a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 79; or a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS; OR other equivalent qualifications.

Programme Structure

  • The program is made up of courses oriented toward three core elements: economics knowledge and theories, applied analyses and the Chinese economy.

  • Students are required to take ten courses, of which four are required courses and six are elective courses.

  • For the Summer Term, students can opt for participating in a field study course with a designated elective course to meet the 6 units requirement.

Scholarships & funding

  • Entrance scholarships will be offered each year for the most outstanding applicants.
  • For international applicants, they can be considered for the International Postgraduate Scholarship with waive of full year tuition fee and provision of living allowance of HK$100,000.
  • For mainland and local students, scholarship would be granted up to an amount equivalent to a full year tuition fee on the basis of pursuing lifelong learning and academic performance.
  • Merit-based awards will be given to the most outstanding students in the Programme at the time of graduation. 

Applicants who want to be considered for entrance scholarship must submit all required supporting documents on or before the first round admission deadline.

International Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS)

The International Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) scheme at the HKBU School of Business is a global initiative designed to nurture future business leaders, bringing together highly-talented and intellectually-motivated students from around the world to one of our selected taught postgraduate programmes. Although these young achievers come from diverse backgrounds, they have all demonstrated leadership potential and have a common interest in making a difference in the world.

Career paths


This programme is designed for students who want to become a competent applied economists or potential theoretical researchers.

  • The programme offers applied economic courses in Hong Kong. These courses will analyze the relevant areas using the latest economic models. The programme curriculum also consists of courses for analyzing the Chinese economy, which is the current focus of the world.
  • Although we expect that most students entering into this programme are applied oriented, this programme is also well structured to provide students the flexibility of choosing appropriate electives to cater for future research oriented studies.

Career Services

Good career planning and preparation is essential. A typical recruitment cycle can start as early as October for certain industries like Accounting. Therefore, you are advised to start your job search preparation as early as possible.

  • Recruitment talks

A wide range of recruitment talks are held on campus to enable you to familiarize yourself with the procedures in job applications, recruitment processes, company profiles and job information. The talks are held between September to November and February to March every year. More details on the recruitment talks are available at the Career Centre of our university.

  • Job Search Skills workshop

To facilitate your career planning and equip yourself with the necessary job search skills, a series of business skill enhancement and career training workshops are organised by the Career Centre of HKBU as well as the School of Business The workshops include presentation skills, CV writing and interview skills, professional image and business etiquette, time management and etc. You may check the details at the Career Centre. At the programme level, we have invited an investment bank to provide workshop to our students in recent years.

  • Career Advice and Counselling Service

To assist you in planning for your future career and give you a deeper understanding of yourself, the Career Centre of HKBU provides individual career counselling and advising services for students, you can make appointment with the Career Centre.

Employment policy for Non-local Students in Hong Kong

  • Eligibility of non-local students to take up employment in Hong Kong

Under Regulation 2 of the Immigration Regulations, Cap 115A, permission given to a person to reside in Hong Kong as a student shall be subject to the conditions of stay that, inter alia, he/she shall NOT take any employment, whether paid or unpaid.

  • Immigration arrangement for non-local graduates (IANG) policy

Non-local students who have obtained a degree or higher qualification of a full-time and locally accredited programme in Hong Kong may apply to stay / return and work in Hong Kong under the “Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG)”.

Non-local graduates who submit applications to the Immigration Department within six months after the date of their graduation (i.e. the date shown on their graduation certificates) are classified as non-local fresh graduates. Fresh graduates may be granted 12 months stay on time limitation without other conditions of stay provided that normal immigration requirements are met.

In early July (for students graduated in late June) or early October (for students graduated in late September) every year, Graduate School will give all graduates a copy of academic records sent by post to their correspondence address as recorded in the University Cyber Port System (BUniPort). You can use it as a proof of graduation from the University when you apply to stay and work under the IANG.
