PhD Studies in Business and Economics

Hanken School of Economics has PhD studies that lead to an internationally recognized doctorate degree. Hanken is a research intensive business school and as such can offer PhD students a stimulating research environment where they can work in close cooperation with experienced researchers, industry partners, and an international academic research community.

The Hanken PhD Program consists of 4-year doctoral studies, where students have access to many courses, workshops, and conferences that take place in Finland and around the world.

PhD students at Hanken School of Economics can choose a PhD in management and business related subjects such as:

Admission requirements

Students wishing to apply for the Hanken PhD program are required to:

  • Have a research based master’s degree with good grades from a recognized university
  • Decide on a major subject for their PhD studies before applying
  • Complete a GMAT or GRE test
  • Have proficiency in English or Swedish
  • Complete a research proposal

English

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A minimum score of 600 (Paper-based test)/100 (internet-based test). Hanken's code for the TOEFL test is 8433. The test result cannot be older than two (2) years.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): A minimum score of 7. The test result cannot be older than two (2) years.
  • CPE with a minimum score of Grade C.
  • The national certificate of language proficiency in Finland, skill level 6.

Swedish

  • The national certificate of language proficiency in Finland, skill level 6.
  • Language exam for the public administration in Finland, advanced level.

Spring 2017 application round: 30 January - 3 March 2017 at 4 pm (studies start in August 2017)

Autumn 2017 application round: 4 September - 29 September 2017 at 4 pm (studies start in January 2018)
