Program description

Literary Studies English

Literary studies’ comprehensive core includes textual analysis, literary theory, and American, British, and international fiction. We also encourage students to tailor the program to their own interests and incorporate classes from other disciplines.

With the benefit of small class sizes, faculty provide individualized instruction and mentoring, with one-on-one advising to help you choose the courses best suited to your ambitions. Additionally, our faculty are active scholars and researchers, with substantial work in their respective disciplines.

Admission requirements

Goucher College is a four-year residential private liberal arts college. The selection process is highly individualized, and members of Goucher's Admissions Committee read every application, paying particular attention to personal qualities and intellectual promise. Admission is granted to the college for fall and spring semester. We accept the Common Application.

Goucher has adopted a test-optional program, where submitting scores for the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT with writing are optional when applying for admission. Although you may elect not to submit scores as part of the process of determining admission, please know that all admitted applicants who matriculate must furnish test scores for research and advising purposes.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. For the TOEFL, we require a score of 80 or higher with at least a 20 in each section. For the IELTS we require a score of 28 with no section score lower than 7.0.

Program content

In reading historical, American, and international literature, you will hone your skills in recognizing recurrent themes, tropes, and images. It will teach you how to prioritize (which of these patterns matter and why?) and interpret (if this matters to the text, what can be learned from it?). Unlike other art forms in which your view is from the outside, in literature your eye is the narrative’s "I" and you discover what it is like to see from the perspective of someone else.

Tuition fees

The total cost of attendance is $60,150 per year. This includes tuition and required fees, plus room and board. However, 96% of Goucher students receive financial assistance at an average of $37,500 per year.

Scholarships & funding

Goucher offers generous financial aid (consisting of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study) to help bridge the gap between your family's resources and the cost of attending Goucher. Ninety-six percent of Goucher students receive financial aid. We work with each of our students to make college accessible. Please visit the website for more information.
