Program description

French Transnational Studies

Studying language means more than just learning a new vocabulary—it means engaging new cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking across the entire globe. You will immerse yourself in French, speak it, read it, write it, think it, and put it to use in the world, both at home and in the many francophone places where it is spoken every day. The French Transnational Studies Program connects deep exploration of language with the kind of interdisciplinary study that enables you to put your learning into practice through study abroad, service-learning, and internship opportunities.

Admission requirements

Goucher College is a four-year residential private liberal arts college. The selection process is highly individualized, and members of Goucher's Admissions Committee read every application, paying particular attention to personal qualities and intellectual promise. Admission is granted to the college for fall and spring semester. We accept the Common Application.

Goucher has adopted a test-optional program, where submitting scores for the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT with writing are optional when applying for admission. Although you may elect not to submit scores as part of the process of determining admission, please know that all admitted applicants who matriculate must furnish test scores for research and advising purposes.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. For the TOEFL, we require a score of 80 or higher with at least a 20 in each section. For the IELTS we require a score of 28 with no section score lower than 7.0.

Program content

This flexible and interdisciplinary major includes an experiential, individually-tailored project abroad as a central component. The major will give you the skills to read, write, and speak the language accurately with nuance in a range of settings from informal to professional (through an internship), and to interpret authentic French-language media within cultural and historical contexts. In addition, majors will analyze today’s global movements and transnational realities through literary, cinematic, social, and historical lenses to yield insights about the language and cultures of the French-speaking world.

Tuition fees

The total cost of attendance is $60,150 per year. This includes tuition and required fees, plus room and board. However, 96% of Goucher students receive financial assistance at an average of $37,500 per year.

Scholarships & funding

Goucher offers generous financial aid (consisting of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study) to help bridge the gap between your family's resources and the cost of attending Goucher.
